Trial interviews are already widely accepted in the hospitality industry, where <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/aussie-retailer-jb-hi-fi-blasted-over-controversial-job-interview-question-wrong-190058729.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:prospective employees;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prospective employees<\/a> come in for a trial shift before they are <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/canva-bucks-major-ai-job-interview-trend-and-now-expects-it-for-job-seekers-021704087.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:offered the job;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">offered the job<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">It\u2019s designed to put applicants to the test and gauge their suitability for the role. While it\u2019s already a popular practice among tech firms in the US, the concept of a &#8220;72-hour job interview&#8221; where people come in for three (or even five days) in the office is now <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/australia-warned-against-bold-four-day-week-trend-after-tokyo-gifts-workers-extra-day-off-bad-blood-233229546.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:happening in Australia;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">happening in Australia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">Recruitment expert Roxanne Calder told Yahoo Finance she has seen trial interviews popping up in the tech space. Other industries like operations, engineering and marketing have also already jumped on the trend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">RELATED<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">\u201cPeople will do this. Of course they will, because they\u2019ll be attempting anything to fix their recruitment issues or their retention issues or their skills issues, and they\u2019ll potentially look at this,\u201d the EST10 recruitment agency founder said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><a data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/work-and-careers\/careers\/after-a-72-hour-interview-stuart-got-the-job-20251204-p5nkx4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:An AI start-up in Sydney;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">An AI start-up in Sydney<\/a>, for example, recently had a worker complete three to four traditional interviews followed by a 72-hour trial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">The trial involved the worker being given a brief for a project that involved creating a new AI product line, marketing it and getting the first customer. He successfully landed the job afterwards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">Do you have a story to share? <a data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/mailto:tamika.seeto@yahooinc.com\" data-ylk=\"slk:Contact tamika.seeto@yahooinc.com;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Contact tamika.seeto@yahooinc.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">While trial interviews can work in the hospitality industry due to the casual nature of the workforce, Calder said applying it to white-collar, knowledge workforces would prove more challenging.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">\u201cWhen you\u2019ve got <a data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/worrying-sign-australian-workers-005035601.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:unemployment levels;cpos:10;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unemployment levels<\/a> at the levels that we\u2019re at, and when you\u2019ve got a skills shortage, your skilled worker who\u2019s interviewing with you is likely employed, so how are you going to do a trial?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">\u201cOne, they\u2019ll need to take annual leave. Two, they\u2019re probably in breach of their contract if they did that. There are some real complications with trying to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">Trial interviews have already raised eyebrows from job applicants globally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">One job seeker recently went viral after they were told during a job interview that they would need to complete a one-week unpaid trial in order to secure the job.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">They immediately withdrew their application.<\/p>\n<p>    Story Continues  <\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">\u201cA \u2018one week trial\u2019 that requires office attendance and full employee level work is not a trial but unpaid labour. (Source: Supplied)    <\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">While it&#8217;s unclear where in the world the worker was located, in Australia, Calder said the majority of trial interviews she\u2019d seen so far had been paid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">\u201cBut it depends on the circumstances. So if it\u2019s seen as an extension of the interview, then it\u2019s not a paid circumstance,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">\u201cIf it\u2019s, we think we\u2019re going to hire you and we want you to come in and work with us and you\u2019re actually adding some value in the workplace for us, then it is paid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><a data-i13n=\"cpos:11;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fairwork.gov.au\/starting-employment\/unpaid-work\/unpaid-trials\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Fair Work notes;cpos:11;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Fair Work notes<\/a> unpaid work trials may be unlawful where it isn\u2019t necessary to demonstrate the skills required for the job, or has continued for longer than is actually needed; where it involves more than just demonstrating the person\u2019s skills; and where the person is not under direct supervision for the trial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">\u201cI would hasten to advise any companies that are looking to do that over a longer period of time that you would want to pay whoever is coming in,\u201d Calder said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">Calder said trial interviews could have advantages for some sectors, such as hospitality, but she believes the extension to other sectors will ultimately be a \u201cfad\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">\u201cWhen you dig further and put it into knowledge workers, it is very hard for you to judge someone in one day or in five days. I don\u2019t believe that you can really see that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">The method also puts anxiety and pressure on applicants, as employers are \u201cputting the spotlight\u201d on applicants to perform with <a data-i13n=\"cpos:12;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/bosses-warned-over-frustrating-ghosting-trend-facing-125-million-aussie-workers-041403923.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:no guarantee of a job;cpos:12;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">no guarantee of a job<\/a> at the end of it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">\u201cI think it&#8217;s a little bit one-sided, because all of the anxiety or fear sits with the person who&#8217;s coming in for the whole day, the whole week, whatever that might be,\u201d Calder said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">\u201cI don&#8217;t know that it gets the best out of the person that you&#8217;re looking to hire \u2026 I think you&#8217;ve got to be really clear on what you&#8217;re looking for and what you&#8217;re trying to achieve by using this model.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">\u201cIt has a place.
