They say a week can be a long time in the AFL and Collingwood coach Craig McRae would be feeling that right now.

While it may still be the pre-season, the 2023 premiership coach would be hoping his star players can have a speedy recovery after forward Dan McStay was the latest player to suffer an injury setback.

The former Brisbane Lions forward suffered a hamstring injury at training on Wednesday.

McStay will be away from main training over the next couple of weeks, but 7NEWS reporter Xander McGuire says he should return in time for Opening Round.

He is the third Collingwood star to succumb to a soft tissue injury within the last week after both Darcy Moore and Jeremy Howe suffered calf strains.

It comes just days after the club confirmed fellow teammate Bobby Hill was granted a leave of absence to deal with personal issues.

Western Bulldogs midfielder James Harmes and Geelong forward Tyson Stengle also took indefinite personal leave from their respective clubs.

Meanwhile, new GWS Giants recruit Clayton Oliver has also suffered a pre-season setback this week as he was confined to a stationery bike with a strained calf injury.

The former Demon will be out of action for at least the next fortnight and joined his captain Toby Greene who has been dealing with a glute issue.

Oliver’s former skipper, Melbourne’s Max Gawn will also be sidelined for a while due to a finger injury. Together with Greene, they will now both be in a race against the clock to be ready in time for next month’s State of Origin clash in Perth.

It has been a nightmare week around the league with Carlton young gun Jesse Motlop and North Melbourne defender Jackson Archer were both ruled out for 12 months after suffering season-ending ACL tears.
