And they did not hold back.<\/p>\n
Rogan brought up the topic with the actors, describing being \u201ccanceled\u201d as \u201cthis idea that one thing you said or one thing you did, and now we\u2019re going to exaggerate that to the fullest extent and cast you out of civilization for life.\u201d <\/p>\n
Damon offered, \u201cin perpetuity.\u201d <\/p>\n
The actor expanded on that thought, saying, \u201cBecause I bet some of those people would have preferred to go to jail for 18 months or whatever, and then come out and say, \u2018I paid my debt. Like, we\u2019re done. Like, can we be done?\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cThe thing about that getting kind of excoriated, publicly like that, it just never ends,\u201d Damon continued. \u201cAnd it\u2019s the first thing that\u2026 you know, it just will follow you to the grave.\u201d<\/p>\n

Damon himself has been subject to \u201ccancel culture\u201d of a sort throughout his long time in the spotlight. His habit of saying things that rub certain people the wrong way caught Bill Maher\u2019s eye<\/a> in 2021.<\/p>\n \u201cIt is a phenomenon that truly fascinates me, that every couple of years, Matt Damon, one of the most likable guys in Hollywood, with impeccable liberal credentials, is again flailing around in cancel culture quicksand,\u201d Maher said, referring to a story about Damon saying he only stopped using the \u201cf-slur\u201d after his daughter told him it was inappropriate. The actor later clarified that he \u201cnever called anyone\u201d that word in his personal life.<\/p>\n Years earlier, Damon had to apologize for appearing to dismiss<\/a> the need for diversity on movie sets in a scene from his HBO documentary series Project Greenlight. <\/p>\n The actors joined Rogan on Friday to promote their new Netflix movie The Rip<\/a>. The film follows Miami cops who discover millions in stashed cash, leading them to question each other\u2019s loyalty. Affleck told Rogan that the film shows the \u201cslippery slope\u201d people can get into before making big mistakes.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a much more honest evaluation of people. And it allows for, like, complexity and forgiveness and f—ing all the s–t that\u2019s sort of beautiful about people like rather than this notion of like, well, we\u2019re going to be binary, good or bad, perfect or not, whatever, and any infraction permanently stains you.\u201d <\/p>\n \u201cYou become like an outcast. And I don\u2019t think anybody wants to think you\u2019re the sum total of\u2026 who you are is your worst moment,\u201d Affleck continued.<\/p>\n Added Damon, \u201cIt\u2019s about evolution and our own personal evolution, and we\u2019re all on our own path towards that.
