{"id":419169,"date":"2026-01-17T13:31:24","date_gmt":"2026-01-17T13:31:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/419169\/"},"modified":"2026-01-17T13:31:24","modified_gmt":"2026-01-17T13:31:24","slug":"maguire-comments-on-haas-as-prop-closes-on-short-term-deal-nrl-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/419169\/","title":{"rendered":"Maguire comments on Haas as prop closes on short-term deal &#8211; NRL News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerotackle.com\/nrl\/teams\/brisbane-broncos\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brisbane Broncos<\/a> head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerotackle.com\/coaches\/michael-maguire\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Maguire<\/a> has reaffird Payne Haas&#8217; commitment to the club, despite reports the star prop will only sign a one-year contract extension.<\/p>\n<p>Haas, who is due to be off-contract at the end of 2026, has fielded interest from rival <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerotackle.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NRL<\/a> clubs and rugby union competitions.<\/p>\n<p>It was believed that while he wouldn&#8217;t play against the Broncos, he was considering a reported $3 million per year offer from the Saudi Arabian-backed R360 competition, which was due to launch at the end of this year.<\/p>\n<p>The postponment of that venture to 2028 means Haas will almost certainly re-sign with the Broncos, but as peviously reported, the deal may well only be for a single season to get him to the end of 2027.<\/p>\n<p>That ultimately means the prop is going to be back off-contract at the same time as R360 are preparing for their first season.<\/p>\n<p>While that will ubdoubtedly leave the Broncos and their fans nervous over what the long-term future holds, but speaking to Code Sports, Maguire said Haas loves the club.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPayne loves the club,\u201d Maguire told the publication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sort of don&#8217;t get involved too much in that (contract) space, but one thing I do know is Payne loves the Broncos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo watch him enjoy and be a part of something pretty special here \u2026 the club means a lot to him and I&#8217;m sure that will sort itself out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Intriguingly, the prop has been linked with a departure from Brisbane before having asked for a release at one point when the club were struggling for success.<\/p>\n<p>Haas has always had the goal of winning a premiership with Brisbane, but with that now complete after their grand final victory over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerotackle.com\/nrl\/teams\/melbourne-storm\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Melbourne Storm<\/a> in 2025, his future could more uncertain than ever.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s understood Haas and the Broncos will formally agree to a new deal for 2027 in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Brisbane Broncos head coach Michael Maguire has reaffird Payne Haas&#8217; commitment to the club, despite reports the star&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":381605,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[568],"tags":[64,63,761,762,158,85],"class_list":["post-419169","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nrl","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-national-rugby-league","tag-nationalrugbyleague","tag-nrl","tag-sports"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/419169","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=419169"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/419169\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/381605"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=419169"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=419169"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=419169"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
