{"id":419564,"date":"2026-01-17T17:59:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-17T17:59:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/419564\/"},"modified":"2026-01-17T17:59:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-17T17:59:15","slug":"thierry-cazeneuve-longstanding-director-of-criterium-du-dauphine-libere-dies-at-74","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/419564\/","title":{"rendered":"Thierry Cazeneuve, longstanding director of Crit\u00e9rium du Dauphin\u00e9 Lib\u00e9r\u00e9, dies at 74"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"bae2ac6a-af0e-4bcb-bb10-858ceded94a3\">France lost one of its top former race organisers this weekend when it was announced that Thierry Cazeneuve, the longstanding director of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/criterium-du-dauphine\/\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/criterium-du-dauphine\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Crit\u00e9rium du Dauphin\u00e9 Lib\u00e9r\u00e9<\/a>, died on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Under Cazeneuve&#8217;s 21-year directorship from 1988-2009, the race &#8211; first with a name shortened to the Crit\u00e9rium du Dauphin\u00e9 since 2010 and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/news\/adieu-criterium-du-dauphine-hello-tour-auvergne-rhone-alpes-french-stage-race-undergoes-major-name-change\/\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/news\/adieu-criterium-du-dauphine-hello-tour-auvergne-rhone-alpes-french-stage-race-undergoes-major-name-change\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">now renamed the Tour du Auvergne-Rh\u00f4ne-Alpes<\/a> &#8211; consolidated its position as a key build-up event for the Tour de France.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"bae2ac6a-af0e-4bcb-bb10-858ceded94a3-2\">For many years, Cazeneuve was also the president of the Ligue Professionnelle du Cyclisme Fran\u00e7ais (LCPF), which oversees the professional side of the sport in the country, as well as being a reputed cycling journalist in his own right.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>But he&#8217;ll mostly be remembered for his work as director of the Dauphin\u00e9 &#8211; as the race was widely known &#8211; during a time when it went through economic difficulties but also enjoyed some notable highpoints with wins for riders as great as five-times Tour winner Miguel Indurain (twice), Colombia&#8217;s first Grand Tour winner Lucho Herrera, Charly Mottet, and Philippa York.<\/p>\n<p>Born on September 10, 1951, Cazeneuve joined the Dauphin\u00e9 Lib\u00e9r\u00e9, the regional newspaper founded by his uncle Georges &#8211; a former member of the French Resistance during World War II &#8211; as a reporter in 1973 and he rapidly moved into its sports section.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The newspaper had created the race of the same name in 1947, and long after the spell Cazeneuve had spent as a teenager handing out paper race publicity hats in 1970 on the roadside, Cazeneuve became its director in 1988.<\/p>\n<p>He then became head of the Crit\u00e9rium du Dauphin\u00e9 Lib\u00e9r\u00e9 in 1988, the same year Lucho Herrera added another major notch to his progress toward becoming a breakthrough Colombian star with a victory in the race, and stayed there until the race was taken over by ASO, the Tour organisers, in 2009. During that time, he also served as head of the LCPF from 2003 to 2007.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">The latest race content, interviews, features, reviews and expert buying guides, direct to your inbox!<\/p>\n<p>As reported by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lequipe.fr\/Cyclisme-sur-route\/Actualites\/Disparition-thierry-cazeneuve-ancien-directeur-du-criterium-du-dauphine-libere-est-mort\/1634261\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.lequipe.fr\/Cyclisme-sur-route\/Actualites\/Disparition-thierry-cazeneuve-ancien-directeur-du-criterium-du-dauphine-libere-est-mort\/1634261\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">L&#8217;\u00c9quipe<\/a> &#8211; a newspaper with which he had strong links throughout his life &#8211; Cazeneuve also succeeded renowned French cycling journalist Pierre Chany as editor of the Fabulous History of the Tour de France, a 1000-page work of reference.
