(ABC News: Baz Ruddick)<\/p>\n<p>Roots in the old country<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Bianka Vidonja Balanzategui, a historian with an interest in 20th-century migration, said the &#8216;seat of knowledge&#8217; tradition had roots in the Italian communities that were established through migration to the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Trees, tables, chairs of knowledge in the Italian community are gathering places for elderly gentlemen to meet,&#8221; Dr Vidonja Balanzategui said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They would talk about their ailments, the world, argue about the state of the world, and [talk about] their families.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Many of these gentlemen were farmers, so they had retired and may have moved into the township.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman with shoulder length hair and glasses smiles at the camera.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/ef5c512220ac8e6912a6219cbd93ac6d.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Bianka Vidonja Balanzategui says gathering places in North Queensland are likely a tradition that came from Italian migrants in the region.\u00a0 (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said the tradition could be traced back to the Roman forum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Around the forum were our main civic buildings \u2014 your important buildings,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;All the Italian piazzas reflect that forum construction landscape.
