(Christopher Pike/Pool Photo via AP)

That’s also part of the reason why the hype surrounding him has been rather subdued.

He’s not an Aussie battler like a Wayne Arthurs or a Peter Doohan from generations previous who’s not expected to compete with the stars of the tour at a grand slam.

And he was never considered a prodigy like Kyrgios or Bernard Tomic as a teenager with the potential to become a grand slam champion.

His closest comparison to previous Australian stars is Lleyton Hewitt for his ability to cover the court at world-class levels to make up for a lack of an imposing stature or serve.

But he doesn’t possess Hewitt’s ebullient nature which was both popular and polarising during his lengthy career.

Even though Hewitt still holds the record for being the world’s youngest No.1 at 20 and he won the US Open and Wimbledon before he had turned 22, he was able to sustain the reputation for being an underdog who never said die, particularly when the more athletically gifted Federer, then Nadal and co took over.

De Minaur doesn’t need to go all the way at the Australian Open over the next fortnight to get his name up in lights.

But he has to show that he can conquer the hurdle of getting past the quarter-finals at what would be his eighth attempt in a grand slam.

Lleyton Hewitt. That’s my priority.”

Good to hear and hopefully de Minaur translates the talk into results.

He deserves his moment in the spotlight and he still has many years left to prove that he can make the jump from nearly man to champion.

And he doesn’t have to become a typical tennis brat to do so. If he stays true to himself and his hard-working ethic, a chance will come but he’s got to be ready to take it like Pat Rafter – twice – and Sam Stosur when they became US Open champions against the odds.

[565
18278,64,63,6571,952,85,747
0":"post-421882","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-tennis","8":"tag-alex-de-minaur","9":"tag-au","10":"tag-australia","11":"tag-australian-open","12":"tag-featured","13":"tag-sports","14":"tag-tennis
["GET
