{"id":424112,"date":"2026-01-19T22:12:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-19T22:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/424112\/"},"modified":"2026-01-19T22:12:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-19T22:12:10","slug":"today-in-history-january-20-the-man-hitler-wanted-as-king-crowned-in-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/424112\/","title":{"rendered":"Today in History &#8211; January 20: The man Hitler wanted as king crowned in UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On January 20, 1936, the crown of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"United Kingdom\">United Kingdom<\/a> was placed on the head of Edward VIII, a man later accused of being a Nazi sympathiser and whose resignation from the throne Adolf Hitler was recorded lamenting.<\/p>\n<p>Edward, the eldest child of George V, was a World War I veteran and known for his charm and fashion sense, which made him popular with the public.<\/p>\n<p>But he encountered his first great controversy not long after acceding to the throne, with his determination to marry US divorcee Wallis Simpson.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/9f00bc6c-6cc5-4f8c-bc91-f50f6e0b1643.jpeg\"   alt=\"June 1922:  King George V of Great Britain on the steps of Buckingham Palace with his son Prince Edward, later King Edward VIII. (Getty)<\/p>\n<p>The prime ministers of what were then the UK&#8217;s dominions &#8211; which constituted the later Commonwealth of Nations &#8211; objected to the match, and Edward faced the prospect of the resignation of the UK government.<\/p>\n<p>So, besotted, he gave up his crown for love.<\/p>\n<p>He hardly succumbed to a life of beggary, though, with he and Simpson appointed Duke and Duchess of Windsor under the reign of Edward&#8217;s younger brother, George VI.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/7f650ab3-b253-409f-8fde-2a9af515e343.jpeg\"   alt=\"\"\/>The marriage of the Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson. (Print Collector\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Edward was king for just 326 days.<\/p>\n<p>In 1937, the married couple went on a tour of Nazi-led Germany, during which Edward performed Nazi salutes and the couple were treated with great respect.<\/p>\n<p>Edward was a supporter of the policy of appeasement toward Hitler &#8211; in his own words, because he did not wish to see a new outbreak of terrible violence after WWI.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/5214ea8a-c177-483b-8661-b7ac4fbe78ee.jpeg\"   alt=\"\"\/>The Duke and Duchess of Windsor greet Adolf Hitler.
