Smith drops sitter | 00:36<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Australia named a provisional 15-player squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the subcontinent, with the likes of Matt Short, Cooper Connolly and Xavier Bartlett earning selection, but personnel changes are permitted until 31 January.<\/p>\n<p>And last week, Smith threw a cat among the pigeons by proving he was still a force to be reckoned with in the game\u2019s shortest format.<\/p>\n<p>After hitting a 41-ball hundred during Friday\u2019s Sydney Smash against crosstown rivals the Thunder at the SCG \u2014 headlined by a record-breaking 32-run over against seamer Ran Hadley \u2014 Smith cracked a half-century during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com.au\/cricket\/domestic-cricket\/big-bash\/bbl-15-live-brisbane-heat-vs-sydney-sixers-live-blog-updates-match-centre-finals-scenarios-news-videos-highlights-steve-smith\/news-story\/27dd91b2c715faca10be758d6b97baf6\" title=\"www.foxsports.com.au\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Sunday\u2019s must-win contest against the Brisbane Heat<\/a> at the Gabba.<\/p>\n<p>During his time in New York in the off-season, Smith hired a personal trainer to help build his upper-body muscle with the hopes of improving his power-hitting, which paid dividends when he clobbered Thunder fast bowler Nathan McAndrew onto the roof of the SCG\u2019s Brewongle Stand, one of the biggest strikes witnessed at the iconic venue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying to get a bit stronger and hit the ball a little bit further,\u201d Smith recently explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve got to try and keep up with some of the guys that hit the ball a mile.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The right-hander has been a class above the rest of the competition, averaging 78.54 across his 15 last BBL innings, including four hundreds, a competition record, at a blistering strike rate of 171.42, with former Australian batter Mark Waugh declaring that he \u201cshould be the first player picked\u201d for the T20 World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s the best player in the competition at the moment,\u201d Waugh told Fox Cricket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe definitely should be in the Australian team (for the T20 World Cup). Short and Connolly provide versatility with team balance while producing handy off-spin if required.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIdeally (Smith) would open, and maybe Mitch Marsh could bat three,\u201d Waugh continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re serious, he should be in there. If you\u2019re picking your best team and he\u2019s available, he\u2019s got to be in there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know how good he is. He\u2019s a great player of spin, one of the best. You take all that into account, it would seem ridiculous that he\u2019s not in there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters on Monday afternoon, chief selector George Bailey declared that Smith\u2019s T20 resurgence was a \u201cgreat problem to have\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(Smith\u2019s) playing incredibly well, as he has done in the BBL for the last couple of years, in a position that we\u2019ve got really good coverage in,\u201d Bailey said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen he\u2019s had international opportunities of late, it has been at the top.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s playing incredibly well, but Mitch Marsh and Travis Head are also playing incredibly well, and they\u2019ve done really well at the top of us in that format.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith missed selection in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com.au\/cricket\/uncapped-trio-favoured-over-inform-smith-in-brutal-snubbing-as-aussies-reveal-t20-squad\/news-story\/bf7243e970551e49960af816554259ac\" title=\"www.foxsports.com.au\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Australia\u2019s 17-player squad for the upcoming T20 series against Pakistan<\/a>, which featured young tearaway Mahli Beardman and Sixers all-rounder Jack Edwards.<\/p>\n<p>While it\u2019s important to continue blooding youth in an ageing Australian team, winning back the T20 World Cup trophy should be a priority for the national selectors \u2014 and Smith knows how to perform on the big stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(Smith\u2019s) played a lot of international T20 cricket. Clearly, when he goes back to the Big Bash, he is a level above,\u201d Bailey continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can get a good read on whether someone has the ability to play the next level, and there\u2019s no doubt that Steve has.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there were moving parts and something was required around there, no doubt his name would be in the mix.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith gets out to an absolute seed | 00:43<\/p>\n<p>Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and David \u2014 each named in Australia\u2019s provisional squad \u2014 are nursing injuries ahead of the T20 World Cup, with the potential for one of them to be withdrawn at the eleventh hour. Pending player availability and squad balance, Smith could be added to Australia\u2019s squad as a late injury replacement.<\/p>\n<p>The switch doesn\u2019t have to be like-for-like \u2014 ahead of the 2023 World Cup in India, batter Marnus Labuschagne was named as a last-minute replacement for spinner Ashton Agar, which proved a masterstroke when the Queenslander played a crucial role in the triumphant final against the home nation.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about the prospect of a national T20 recall, Smith told Fox Cricket last week: \u201cNot the World Cup. I think that\u2019s already done and dusted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cOf course, I always want to play for Australia in big tournaments, but I think that ship\u2019s sailed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI reckon they\u2019ve got two opening batters who are doing pretty well. So I\u2019m relaxed, doing what I can here and having some fun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d love to be part of an Olympics and that\u2019s why I stopped playing one-day cricket \u2026 to give myself more opportunities to play Big Bash and a few other tournaments around the world and keep putting my name up there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll I can do is just keep scoring runs wherever I play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having finished second on the BBL standings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com.au\/cricket\/domestic-cricket\/big-bash\/bbl-finals-schedule-2026-bbl-15-finals-dates-after-table-set-structure-bracket-format-times-and-venues-who-plays-who-when-is-the-big-bash-final\/news-story\/95f110e8405f8a98d43dfec89083fb48\" title=\"www.foxsports.com.au\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">the Sixers will next face the Perth Scorchers at Optus Stadium<\/a> for Tuesday\u2019s Qualifier, another opportunity for Smith to press his T20 credentials, with the victor to host this weekend\u2019s grand final.
