American Ethan Quinn, 21, pulled off a comprehensive upset on Tuesday night at Melbourne Park, dismantling the 23rd seed Tallon Griekspoor 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 to secure his place in the round of 64.

Quinn, currently ranked number 80 in the world, needed less than two hours to dismiss the Dutchman in what was a remarkably one-sided affair for an opening-round match against a seeded opponent. The young American showcased the aggressive baseline game that has fueled his rapid rise into the top 100, leaving Griekspoor with few answers throughout the three sets.

The defeat continues an alarming and highly specific trend for Tallon Griekspoor in major tournaments. Despite being a consistent seed over the last twelve months, the Dutchman has now suffered straight-set exits without reaching a single tiebreak in three consecutive Grand Slams.

Griekspoor’s weak track record in Slams

This pattern began at Wimbledon 2025, where he was seeded 31st and fell in the opening round, followed by a similarly abrupt exit as the 29th seed at the 2025 US Open. His performance as the 23rd seed in Melbourne marks his third straight opening-round failure at a major in 2026, further highlighting a struggle to find his best form on the game’s biggest stages.

Tallon Griekspoor’s greatest performance in a Grand Slam came at Roland-Garros 2025, where he reached the Round of 16 (fourth round) for the first time in his career. Before this breakthrough, his best results were consistent third-round appearances at the Australian Open (2023, 2024) and the US Open (2024).

For Quinn, the victory represents a significant milestone in his first full season on the main tour. After a breakout 2025 where he transitioned from the collegiate level at the University of Georgia to the professional circuit, he has now proven he can compete with the world’s elite in a best-of-five format.
