{"id":424857,"date":"2026-01-20T06:09:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-20T06:09:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/424857\/"},"modified":"2026-01-20T06:09:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T06:09:11","slug":"nsw-police-commissioner-extends-sydney-protest-restrictions-with-significantly-limited-scope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/424857\/","title":{"rendered":"NSW Police commissioner extends Sydney protest restrictions with &#8216;significantly limited&#8217; scope"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon has announced restrictions on protests in parts of Sydney will be extended.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">However, Commissioner Lanyon said he had &#8220;significantly limited its scope&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Effectively, the extended restrictions now go from Darling Harbour through the north of the CBD to Oxford Street and all of the Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command, and does not include Hyde Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The powers were initially granted to police in legislation that was rushed through NSW parliament after the Bondi terror attack on December 14, when 15 people were killed at a Hanukkah event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This is a time for calm. It&#8217;s a time for peace. (Supplied: NSW Police Force)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The laws give police the ability to declare that no public assemblies can be authorised after a terror attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Police activated the power on Christmas Eve and extended it for another 14 days on January 6.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That declaration can be extended in two week increments for up to three months.<\/p>\n<p>Decision allows for Australia Day protests to go ahead<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Previously the restrictions related to public assemblies in the South West Metropolitan, North West Metropolitan and Central Metropolitan policing areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The reduced restriction area will now allow a planned Invasion Day rally on Australia Day to go ahead.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\" Invasion Day rally\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/2425e485fa798af79f7c2533279c8cbc.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A planned Invasion Day rally on Australia Day will now go ahead. (ABC News: Brendan Esposito)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s about getting the balance right between community safety and a right to protest.
