{"id":426465,"date":"2026-01-20T23:19:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-20T23:19:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/426465\/"},"modified":"2026-01-20T23:19:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T23:19:11","slug":"a-candid-mental-health-exhibition-in-south-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/426465\/","title":{"rendered":"A candid mental health exhibition in south London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A wide-ranging exhibition of works from textiles to photos to paintings, all share one common link \u2013 they\u2019re all by people who have struggled with their mental health.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/8400e186.delivery.rocketcdn.me\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Bethlem-Museum-of-the-Mind-kindred-01.jpg\" class=\"lightbox\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-86898\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"605\" height=\"336\" data-lazy- data-lazy- data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Bethlem-Museum-of-the-Mind-kindred-01-1024x569.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The collection, on display at the Bethlem Museum of the Mind, shows very individual responses to hospital treatments, through to how social connections have helped people outside the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition is peppered with scenes of gatherings, both spontaneous and organised, joyful and sorrowful. It also features the polar opposite \u2013 images of isolation when people feel abandoned by society.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the portraits are quite striking, such as Benji Reid\u2019s award-winning self-portrait, showing how his daughter keeps him connected to his family.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/8400e186.delivery.rocketcdn.me\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/Bethlem-Museum-of-the-Mind-kindred-03.jpg\" class=\"lightbox\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-86900 lazyload\" alt=\"\" width=\"605\" height=\"336\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Bethlem-Museum-of-the-Mind-kindred-03-1024x569.jpg\"  data-eio-rwidth=\"1024\" data-eio-rheight=\"569\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, grim photos of care institutions contrast with interpretive paintings of the sale, opening with a cry to stop treating someone by just shoving pills at them.<\/p>\n<p>Patients\u2019 views also appear in the local Bethlem newspaper, written by and for patients, even if the July 1973 edition on display opens with a criticism of fellow residents for not participating in group activities.
