{"id":427002,"date":"2026-01-21T05:02:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T05:02:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/427002\/"},"modified":"2026-01-21T05:02:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T05:02:09","slug":"china-could-widen-curbs-on-japans-imports-rare-earths-if-tensions-worsen-morgan-stanley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/427002\/","title":{"rendered":"China could widen curbs on Japan\u2019s imports, rare earths if tensions worsen: Morgan Stanley"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>China could launch anti-dumping investigations into Japanese imports, impose more export bans and discourage consumption of the country\u2019s goods if it escalates a dispute with Tokyo that <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/diplomacy\/article\/3338020\/why-feud-between-tokyo-and-beijing-could-rage-while-yet?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">began in November<\/a>, according to Morgan Stanley.Beijing might also <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/global-economy\/article\/3339615\/japan-firms-seen-stockpiling-rare-earths-tokyo-looks-g7-face-china-controls?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">expand a temporary ban<\/a> on the sale of rare earth metals \u2013 crucial components in hi-tech hardware and automobiles \u2013 to target civilian manufacturing, the New York-based multinational investment bank said in a note by a team of researchers, led by chief Asia economist Chetan Ahya.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The bank said a lack of further escalation remained the \u201cbaseline scenario\u201d for the two Asian countries, however, while warning that Beijing still had unused leverage.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cIn such a scenario, we could see downside risks to growth, with sectors such as autos, electronics, chemicals and consumer discretionary and staples in Japan the most affected,\u201d the researchers wrote in the note, published on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Those actions followed a speech by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on November 7, in which she said Tokyo <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/diplomacy\/article\/3338020\/why-feud-between-tokyo-and-beijing-could-rage-while-yet?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">could justify a military response<\/a> if Beijing attacked Taiwan. Beijing sees Taiwan as part of China to be reunited by force if necessary.
