We have seen multiple <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2026\/01\/18\/microsoft-confirms-emergency-updates-for-most-windows-pcs\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2026\/01\/18\/microsoft-confirms-emergency-updates-for-most-windows-pcs\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"emergency updates\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">emergency updates<\/a>. But serious problems remain. Users keep reaching out \u201cto share their nightmare experience,.\u201d For those unaware, &#8220;this update is a mandatory security patch, so it\u2019s going to attempt installation whether you like it or not.\u201d And that makes failures unavoidable.<\/p>\n<p>Three of the issues have been acknowledged by Microsoft. The <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/office\/classic-outlook-pop-account-profiles-hang-and-freeze-after-windows-11-update-to-kb5074109-590fe356-ecc2-49f4-b9e3-bd39fafa58f6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/office\/classic-outlook-pop-account-profiles-hang-and-freeze-after-windows-11-update-to-kb5074109-590fe356-ecc2-49f4-b9e3-bd39fafa58f6\" aria-label=\"Classic Outlook freezing\">Classic Outlook freezing<\/a> bug, the <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/topic\/january-17-2026-kb5077744-os-builds-26200-7627-and-26100-7627-out-of-band-27015658-9686-4467-ab5f-d713b617e3e4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/topic\/january-17-2026-kb5077744-os-builds-26200-7627-and-26100-7627-out-of-band-27015658-9686-4467-ab5f-d713b617e3e4\" aria-label=\"Remote Desktop\">Remote Desktop<\/a> Bug, and the <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/release-health\/status-windows-11-23h2#devices-with-secure-launch-might-fail-to-shut-down-or-hibernate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/release-health\/status-windows-11-23h2#devices-with-secure-launch-might-fail-to-shut-down-or-hibernate\" aria-label=\"failure to shutdown\">failure to shutdown<\/a> bug. \u201cBut it doesn\u2019t look like there were only three issues that needed Microsoft\u2019s attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Windows sleep deprivation issue.<\/p>\n<p>Windows Latest<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft is looking into an issue with desktop.ini that likely means it will be fixed soon. But there\u2019s also a new sleep state issue that is garnering increasing user complaints. This preserves battery and power, but the issue is PCs are not falling asleep as planned.<\/p>\n<p>Windows Latest says \u201cthere\u2019s a regression bug in Windows 11 25H2 on the desktop S3 sleep path. Even with hybrid sleep and wake timers disabled, the system-level Maintenance Activator (SystemEventsBroker) does not properly clear the maintenance wake context after the first wake, causing the second sleep to wake immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"embed-base color-body color-body-border link-embed embed-2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2026\/01\/20\/microsoft-deletes-google-chrome-after-windows-mistake\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Microsoft Deletes Google Chrome After Windows Mistake\" data-ga-track=\"forbesEmbedly:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2026\/01\/20\/microsoft-deletes-google-chrome-after-windows-mistake\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ForbesMicrosoft Deletes Google Chrome After Windows MistakeBy Zak Doffman<\/a><\/p>\n<p>All users are advised to watch for additional emergency out-of-band updates to fix outstanding issues. Some may await February\u2019s updates, which means installing it as soon as available. Not great, but unfortunately not that unusual.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re monitoring reports of other problems in the January 2026 update,\u201d Windows Latest says, \u201cincluding a bug where the keyboard and mouse do not work correctly. The list of reported issues keeps growing, which is concerning, as Windows 11 had more than 20 major problems in 2025 with just 12 security updates.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Beware of January&#8217;s update.
