Extreme heat is heading to southeastern parts of the country for what could be an extended stretch. Then there is a hint of rain on the horizon \u2014 but it may not affect many.<\/p>\n

After a mild end to the week, the next high pressure system jumps out to the Tasman Sea, letting all the heat over the west and interior funnel down into the southeast.<\/p>\n

As temperatures rise into the \u2018very hot\u2019 part of the scale (over 37C near the coast, and over 40C inland) the quick jump up in temperature arrives with gusty N\/NW winds \u2014 you don\u2019t get that fast a rise in such a short period of time without it being blown here.<\/p>\n

For coastal parts it may be just one day of extreme heat before the wind changes direction, providing some milder relief.<\/p>\n

But for inland areas there is no kind wind change, instead the heat could linger across the weekend and into next week.<\/p>\n

Then the wind changes again, and there is another pulse of heat right through to the coast.<\/p>\n

So, when does it end?<\/p>\n

We will need a proper weather system to flush the heat out, and we have a hint of that from mid next week.<\/p>\n

While the southeast bakes the tropical north is in full swing with significant wet weather. Already this January there are parts of Queensland that have seen three times the monthly average rainfall thanks to the remains of Cyclone Koji.<\/p>\n

Now we have a new tropical low brewing \u2014 this one up in the Kimberley.<\/p>\n

The remains of the Queensland cyclone remained in that state, but this next beast may spread its big burst of moisture further away.<\/p>\n

The leftover rain from this tropical system is currently showing signs of spreading southwards, but the main question is (looking at this a full week out where the guidance is wishy washy at best) where will it go?<\/p>\n

The guidance shows signs of pushing that rain down through the interior of Western Australia and through to the coast, then along the southern parts of South Australia and possibly into Victoria and NSW.<\/p>\n

As usual, it will probably lose all of its oomph by the time it reaches Adelaide and heads eastwards, but it is one to watch around the mid to later parts of next week.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, the shower and storm activity continues each day over Queensland, anywhere east of a persistent trough. That trough looks like taking a break from about Sunday onwards, so that the southern half of Queensland can also take a break.<\/p>\n
