{"id":42886,"date":"2025-08-04T13:14:27","date_gmt":"2025-08-04T13:14:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/42886\/"},"modified":"2025-08-04T13:14:27","modified_gmt":"2025-08-04T13:14:27","slug":"tough-wa-fishing-rules-fail-to-protect-sustainability-of-dhufish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/42886\/","title":{"rendered":"Tough WA fishing rules fail to protect &#8216;sustainability&#8217; of dhufish"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Despite two years of tough fishing restrictions along the West Australian coast, a confidential report has revealed the population of demersal fish has not improved and even declined for the dhufish.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In 2022, the McGowan Labor government introduced new fishing rules and catch restrictions in the West Coast Demersal Scalefish Fishery (WCDSF) in a bid to boost the recovery of key species such as snapper, baldchin groper and dhufish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) has not publicly released a stock assessment report on the fishery since its 2021 report, which looked at the coastline from Kalbarri to Augusta.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man fishing on a boat near pelicans, blue sky, some clouds, sea till far, green hills in horizon.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/e8764e38dabbf6dac371d0dd33713a76\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Recreational fishing is a popular hobby on the WA coast. (ABC News: Jodie Hamilton)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Managing director of think-tank Sustainable Seafood Australia, Darryl Hockey, supplied the ABC with a briefing note he secured under Freedom of Information, sent by the state&#8217;s scientists to the then Fisheries minister Don Punch in February 2024, on the WCDSF.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The briefing note from DPIRD said the status of dhufish had &#8220;escalated from high to severe risk,&#8221; while snapper remained at severe risk and baldchin groper at high risk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The government has not publicly released the referenced stock assessment report.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Swift&#8217; action needed<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Hockey said the government must act swiftly and further cut fishing catch limits to protect dhufish, such as slashing boat limits from four per day to one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">And he said the government needed to be transparent and release the stock assessment, which is regarded as a key &#8220;health check&#8221; of the fishery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The alarm bells should be ringing,&#8221; Mr Hockey said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Eighteen months down the track, they still haven&#8217;t made any management changes; those changes are overdue, and action is needed now, urgently.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The 2021 stock assessment report states that DPIRD tracks recovery progress by undertaking weight of evidence every three to five years.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A bald man with grey stubble, slightly smile, wears blue tee, hands crossed on a barrier, background blurred.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/6bf336b8f73275811ce2d1b45dfd1996\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Darryl Hockey is calling on real-time electronic reporting of recreational catches. (ABC: Chris Lewis)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Hockey has also accused the government of &#8220;sitting on&#8221; its latest recreational fishing survey.<\/p>\n<p>Real-time reporting needed<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">This survey is also conducted by DPIRD and estimates the recreational sector&#8217;s catch through measures such as phone surveys, boat ramp surveys and remote camera monitoring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In the same briefing note sent to the previous minister in February last year, it flags the recreational boat fishing survey to be finalised in early 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Hockey said with the information in hand, the new Fisheries Minister Jackie Jarvis was in a position to to make an important decision of the sustainability of this fishery.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The management settings put in place by Minister Punch were ridiculous,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A side on shot underwater of a fish swimming near coral.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/3e10490b14c7c6e4f525ebd4671aa0ff\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Rules to protect demersal fish were announced in 2022, but there are concerns fish stocks have not improved.
