Donald Trump says he has agreed to a “framework of a future deal” on Greenland after talks with NATO’s secretary-general, and he will no longer impose tariffs on European nations that had opposed a US takeover.<\/p>\n
“Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st,” he said.<\/p>\n
“Additional discussions are being held concerning The Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland,” he added, referring to his planned missile defence system.<\/p>\n
The agreement could involve Greenland’s natural resources, Trump said.<\/p>\n
“They’re going to be involved in mineral rights and so are we,” he said.<\/p>\n
Trump told broadcaster NSBC that the deal “gets us everything we needed to get” \u2014 especially in terms of “national security and international security”.<\/p>\n
“It’s the ultimate long-term deal,” he said.<\/p>\n
“And I think it puts everybody in a really good position, especially as it pertains to security and minerals and everything else.”<\/p>\n
Trump’s reasons<\/p>\n
Those wary of relying on Trump’s comments \u2014 given the frequent changes \u2014 can instead refer to comments from a NATO spokeswoman.<\/p>\n
“Discussions among NATO allies on the framework the president referenced will focus on ensuring Arctic security through the collective efforts of allies, especially the seven Arctic allies,” she said.<\/p>\n
The Western military alliance added that “negotiations between Denmark, Greenland and the United States will go forward aimed at ensuring that Russia and China never gain a foothold \u2014 economically or militarily \u2014 in Greenland”.<\/p>\n
And there is the crucial bit. China has been widely documented as seeking access to Greenland’s resources, but has regularly been thwarted.<\/p>\n
So that’s where the reference to an economic foothold confirms that the Trump-Rutte discussions included talk about critical minerals.<\/p>\n
Trump had also said in his speech that he was “seeking immediate negotiations” to discuss the acquisition of Greenland from Denmark, “just as we have acquired many other territories throughout our history”.<\/p>\n

But that threat also seems to have abated now, given the language being used by both Trump and NATO.<\/p>\n
Denmark’s foreign minister, Lars L\u00f8kke Rasmussen, welcomed Trump’s Truth Social statement, saying “the day ends better than the day started”.<\/p>\n
But he added: “It is not going to happen that the USA will own Greenland. That is a red line.”<\/p>\n
Europe breathes a sigh of relief \u2026 for now<\/p>\n
For now, many European leaders and business figures may not be too worried about the specifics of any deal that might be agreed \u2014 there will be more on that after European leaders meet in around 24 hours.<\/p>\n
They will be just breathing a sigh of relief that the extraordinary threat of a US invasion of Greenland, and then that of a major US-European trade war, has receded.<\/p>\n

Financial markets \u2014 the US dollar, US bond markets, US stocks \u2014 tanked the day before Trump’s arrival in Davos, but regained ground once he made clear he wasn’t going to invade an ally.<\/p>\n
But the price of gold \u2014 the ultimate asset for uncertain times \u2014 surged nonetheless.<\/p>\n
Some things cannot be dumped or undone, though.<\/p>\n
That includes Trump’s note to the Norwegian prime minister a few days ago, linking his approach in Greenland to the fact that he had not been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.<\/p>\n
European leaders \u2014 and others \u2014 have decided they must take their own paths on future security and economic issues.<\/p>\n
