China has been widely documented as seeking access to Greenland’s resources, but has regularly been thwarted.

So that’s where the reference to an economic foothold confirms that the Trump-Rutte discussions included talk about critical minerals.

Trump had also said in his speech that he was “seeking immediate negotiations” to discuss the acquisition of Greenland from Denmark, “just as we have acquired many other territories throughout our history”.

Loading…

But that threat also seems to have abated now, given the language being used by both Trump and NATO.

Denmark’s foreign minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, welcomed Trump’s Truth Social statement, saying “the day ends better than the day started”.

But he added: “It is not going to happen that the USA will own Greenland. That is a red line.”

Europe breathes a sigh of relief … for now

For now, many European leaders and business figures may not be too worried about the specifics of any deal that might be agreed — there will be more on that after European leaders meet in around 24 hours.

They will be just breathing a sigh of relief that the extraordinary threat of a US invasion of Greenland, and then that of a major US-European trade war, has receded.

Donald Trump has now ruled out using military force to acquire Greenland. through his plans to take over Greenland.

The US president has now seemingly backed off on his Greenland invasion and tariff threats.

But he continued to be rude about Europe in his Davos speech.

“Without us, right now you’d all be speaking German,” he told his audience.

A BBC commentator observed that he “may well have forgotten German is the most widely spoken of the four official languages in Switzerland”.

Sitting through one of the US president’s rambling public speeches would itself have been eye-opening for the world’s powerbrokers gathered to hear it.

Having pushed and shoved to get into the hall, many members of the audience started to walk out, or were looking at their phones about halfway through, once Trump had started to walk back his threats.

Standing up to Trump

Beyond hurt feelings, a new steeliness in the position of European nations can be seen in the fact that there has not yet been any sign that the European Parliament would pass the trade deal struck by Trump and von der Leyen last year (which gave the US free access to Europe but imposed US tariffs on European goods).

Parliamentarians had earlier said they would not ratify the deal while Trump’s tariff threats continued.

Leaders are also talking about elevating new trade links with other — non-US — nations and trade blocs, and are expediting their own defence relationships.

NBC News reported that European leaders were discussing whether to rely more on nuclear-armed France and Britain instead of the US, or even develop their own atomic weapons.

Macron has spoken of the need to prioritise buying European military equipment instead of the US stuff.

None of this is going to now change because Trump has backed down on this latest range of threats.

In Davos, European leaders met Trump with strength and he backed down.

And it is a much better path than the conciliatory tone they took with him through 2025.

Laura Tingle is the ABC’s Global Affairs Editor.

US President Donald Trump told the World Economic Forum that to get to Greenland’s rare earth resources, “you’ve…

[11
64,63,99,223513,6693,2490,164,10835,59620,66172,40650,198155
post-429084","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-economy","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-business","tag-davos","tag-denmark","tag-donald-trump","tag-economy","tag-greenland","tag-mark-rutte","tag-nato","tag-world-economic-forum","tag-world-order
["GET
