Maximum temperature records could be broken in some parts of Victoria next week, with the state set to swelter through another heatwave.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday \u2014 the most severe day \u2014 temperatures in at least one northern Victorian town could climb to a record 48 degrees Celsius.<\/p>\n

But authorities warn Victorians could feel the brunt of 40C temperatures from Saturday.<\/p>\n

The Bureau of Meteorology’s Kevin Parkin said the hot and dry continental winds would raise temperatures and increase fire danger across the state.<\/p>\n

“A dome of heat is expected to sit over Victoria, not just this weekend but persisting well into next week,” he said.<\/p>\n

“We’re looking at many centres cracking 40 degrees, including [the northern Victorian town of] Ouyen with 48 degrees on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

“Many centres are probably going to approach their all time-maximum records.<\/p>\n

“This is quite a significant day.”<\/p>\n

Cool changes are expected to bring relief to southern parts of the state on Sunday and again on Tuesday evening, but northern areas could face up to a week of sweltering daily maximums.<\/p>\n

“It’s not good news for the north,” Mr Parkin said.<\/p>\n

“This could easily be four, five, six, seven days of 40-plus degree temperatures inland.”<\/p>\n

No significant rainfall is forecast for Victoria over the next two weeks.<\/p>\n

Extreme fire danger forecast for weekend<\/p>\n

The hot weather comes less than two weeks after multiple out-of-control bushfires catalysed by catastrophic conditions burned through more than 400,000 hectares of the state.<\/p>\n

The Country Fire Authority’s Jason Heffernan said the coming hot temperatures would again drive up fire danger, particularly in the western and south-western parts of the state.<\/p>\n

However, Mr Heffernan said wind speeds are unlikely to be as high as those that fanned the bushfires earlier this month.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Whilst we’re not currently forecasting or predicting catastrophic conditions, we are well and truly intro extreme conditions across multiple days,” he said.<\/p>\n

An extreme fire danger rating is currently forecast in the Wimmera and South West fire districts on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Authorities are expected to declare total fire bans in the coming days, and Mr Heffernan asked all Victorians to avoid using fire over the next few days.<\/p>\n

The state is still recovering from the recent major fires, which are now estimated to have destroyed more than 1,500 structures across the state.<\/p>\n

Authorities said at least 434 homes have been destroyed by the fires and more than 35,000 heads of livestock killed.<\/p>\n

Three fires are still burning out of control in the state’s east \u2014 one near Dargo, one near Walwa and one near Mallacoota.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, Mr Heffernan said other fires were still burning and still posed a danger.<\/p>\n

“The fuels across Victoria have been baking now for a while,” he said.<\/p>\n

“With the next couple of days of heatwave conditions, particularly those very hot days, we are expecting to see internal fire and pockets of unburnt fuel reignite or flare up.”<\/p>\n
