The spotlights are on at Rod Laver Arena, as we get ready for Australia’s James Duckworth and Italian world number two Jannik Sinner, who are about to go in the second round.<\/p>\n

First-up, there’s a performance of “Memory” from\u00a0 Cats from Gabriyel Thomas, which seems like a bit of an odd choice for the tennis, but it’s beautifully performed.<\/p>\n

The 34-year-old Duckworth will be trying to achieve a career best at the Australian Open, reaching the third round for the first time with a win.<\/p>\n

However, even with home support he will be up against it against Sinner, although the Italian has never made it past the last eight here – as opposed to his grand slam titles at Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open.<\/p>\n

In the fourth set, Stan Wawrinka had an early break and was up 3-0.<\/p>\n

Colin Felming said on commentary for Nince that the “juices were flowing” for the Swiss legend but has it disappeared?<\/p>\n

We’re now at 4-3 on serve and Wawrinka needs to win this set to take it to a fifth.<\/p>\n

He looks pretty fatigued and has started to look a little frustrated. He doesn’t want this to be his last ever set at the Australian Open, and neither do the crowd.<\/p>\n

Out on 1573 Arena, the upset is on as Marin Cilic is dominating against Canadian 21st seed Denis Shapovalov.<\/p>\n

The 37-year-old Cilic is turning the clock back, taking the opener 6-4, and adding the second set 6-3 to get the crowd up and about.<\/p>\n

Nine winners and six unforced errors for the set were a better result for Cilic than for the Canadian, but the real key stat was that Shapovalov managed to win just four points on Cilic’s serve all set.<\/p>\n

If that stat doesn’t turn around, the Croatian veteran player might well be headed for the third round.<\/p>\n

Storm Hunter and Maya Joint through to second round of women’s doubles\"Andrew<\/p>\n

Out on court eight, we’ve seen a nearly all-Australian encounter in the women’s doubles, with Storm Hunter and Maya Joint taking on Priscilla Hon and American Ashlyn Kreuger.<\/p>\n

Hon, fresh from last night’s singles loss to American Iva Jovic, showed no signs of taking the result to heart, as she and Kreuger raced through the opening set 6-1.<\/p>\n

But Hunter and Joint rebounded to take the second set by the same scoreline, and finished things off 6-3 in the third.<\/p>\n

The Aussie pair will next take on 12th seeds Tereza Mikhailikova and Briton Olivia Nicholls in the second round.<\/p>\n

Iga \u015awi\u0105tek has never reached the final at Melbourne Park, never mind winning the Australian Open.<\/p>\n

But the Polish second seed has shown her strength with an efficient straight-sets win over Czechia’s Marie Bouzkova.<\/p>\n

\u015awi\u0105tek broke Bouzkova in the eighth game of the second set and served out for a 6-2, 6-3 victory in blustery conditions on John Cain Arena.<\/p>\n

Next up, she will face Anna Kalinskaya for a spot in the fourth round.<\/p>\n

\u015awi\u0105tek acknowledged having issues with the wind on court, but said she was happy to get through.<\/p>\n

Stefanos Tsitsipas has levelled things up on ANZ Arena against Tomas Machac, taking the second set 6-3.<\/p>\n

Tsitsipas took some time to get his left foot tended to before closing out that set, and is walking with a slight limp, but he’s still out there and fighting through it.<\/p>\n

Machac got his first serve in 82 per cent of the time in that set, but incredibly won just 43 per cent of his first serve points.<\/p>\n

Tsitsipas hit 14 winners in the second set to just five from his opponent.<\/p>\n

There’s a reason Iga \u015awi\u0105tek is a five-time grand slam champion \u2014 when challenged, she has the ability to raise her game.<\/p>\n

Marie Bouzkova had jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second set on John Cain Arena, but \u015awi\u0105tek has steadied and her power strokes have given her the break back at 3-3.<\/p>\n

She has held serve for 4-3, and is now just two games away from the third round.<\/p>\n

Gea takes the third set against Wawrinka\"Chris<\/p>\n

Arthur Gea has struck back against Stan Wawrinka on KIA Arena as he takes the third set 6-3 to go a set away from advancing into the third round.<\/p>\n

A much cleaner set of tennis that one from the Frenchman as he sent down 10 winners to just seven unforced errors.<\/p>\n

He still struggled to get his first serve in, doing it just 52 per cent of the time in that set, but was lethal on first serve points (13\/15).<\/p>\n

He’s taken a break to change his outfit before heading back out for the fourth set. Could this be Stan’s last set of tennis at Melbourne Park?<\/p>\n

The Croatian crowd sitting in at 1573 Arena is up and about, as Marin\u00a0\u010cili\u0107\u00a0takes the opening set against Denis Shapovalov.<\/p>\n

\u010cili\u0107, now 37 years old, took the opening set 6-4 against the Canadian number 21 seed.<\/p>\n

He was, of course, a finalist here at Melbourne Park back in 2018 when he lost to Roger Federer in a five-set classic.<\/p>\n

Bouzkova gets the break in the second set against \u015awi\u0105tek\"Andrew<\/p>\n

For the first 45 minutes, not much was working for Marie Bouzkova against Iga \u015awi\u0105tek.<\/p>\n

The world number 44 has tried changing the tempo, coming to the net and aiming to push the second seed wide, but \u015awi\u0105tek seemed to have an answer for everything.<\/p>\n

However, the Polish star has come undone in the third game of the second set, with Bouzkova raising the pressure and bringing errors from the \u015awi\u0105tek racquet.<\/p>\n

Bouzkova broke for 2-1 to get the momentum, and she has consolidated the break for 3-1.<\/p>\n

Can she keep going and take this one to three sets?<\/p>\n

Well, that didn’t take too long \u2014 Iga \u015awi\u0105tek has given the vocal group of Polish fans at John Cain Arena something to cheer about, winning the first set in her second round match.<\/p>\n

\u015awi\u0105tek’s court coverage has been excellent, and she has made life tough for Czechia’s Marie Bouzkova, getting through the opener 6-2.<\/p>\n

Her 17 winners and eight points won from eight net attempts are the keys so far. Bouzkova will need to lift here if she wants to avoid a quick exit.<\/p>\n

The runner-up in 2023, Stefanos Tsitsipas, is in an early hole in his second-round clash against Tomas Machac out on ANZ Arena.<\/p>\n

Tsitsipas dropped the first set 6-4 and is already down a break in the second, with Machac breaking his first service game of the set.<\/p>\n

The Greek star had a 2025 season to forget and therefore is only a No.31 seed in this year’s tournament.<\/p>\n

The shadows have covered almost the entire court on John Cain Arena, and the temperature has dropped to 18 degrees (a bit more on court) for Iga \u015awi\u0105tek and Marie Bouzkova.<\/p>\n

Serving seems to be an issue for both players with some errors and doubles thrown in. Bouzkova broke back to trail 1-2, but immediately gave it back in the following game.<\/p>\n

As the set has advanced, \u015awi\u0105tek – who leads 4-2 – has looked more solid, and she has 13 winners to two, but she is also throwing in some surprise unforced errors.<\/p>\n

The Polish second seed is coming to the net a lot, with a big success rate, such as in this point below:<\/p>\n

Yes, you read that post headline absolutely right. Let me explain.<\/p>\n

Firstly, the important stuff, Wawrinka has levelled this thing up at one set apiece after taking the second 6-3.<\/p>\n

Gea struggled with his first serve in that set, getting it in just 52 per cent of the time, and Stan was able to fully capitalise.<\/p>\n

The Frenchman also had 13 unforced errors to just six winners in that set. He’s gone down into the bowels of KIA Arena to steady himself.<\/p>\n

Now for the jokes. Just before the end of the second set, Gea accidentally hit a ball well into the stands. Collecting it and returning it to the players was a man dressed head to toe in a Willy Wonka kit.<\/p>\n

Wawrinka has responded well to losing the first set, grabbing an early break over Gea in the second.<\/p>\n

The Swiss leads 4-2 in the second set and he’s been assisted by 10 unforced errors from the Frenchman.<\/p>\n

I get the sense that we could be in for a long afternoon out on KIA Arena between these two men. There’s not a whole lot between them.<\/p>\n

Play has begun on John Cain Arena, where women’s second seed, Poland’s\u00a0Iga \u015awi\u0105tek has got quickly into gear against Czechia’s Marie Bouzkova.<\/p>\n

\u015awi\u0105tek, who has never got beyond the semi-finals at Melbourne Park, looks locked in early in this tournament.<\/p>\n

She breezed through her first service game against the world number 44 Bouzkova, rattling off a series of forehand and backhand winners.<\/p>\n

And the 24-year-old has continued on with an immediate break of serve, aided by a series of errors and a double fault from Bouzkova.<\/p>\n

Maddison Inglis is into the third round of a grand slam for just the second time in her 10-year career after the gutsiest win over German veteran Laura Siegemund.<\/p>\n

“Unbelievable. I actually can’t believe it,” she tells Channel Nine.<\/p>\n

“To be back in the third round of the Australian Open, far out I I’m lost for words right now.<\/p>\n

“I’m so excited.<\/p>\n

“Coming into this, I hadn’t played a match for six weeks. I didn’t come in with high expectations. I knew that I’m a good player, I was hitting the ball well and I can take it to anyone on any day. But I wouldn’t have dreamed of this.”<\/p>\n

She says the\u00a0hometown crowd got her through and she’ll need another boost from them in the third round, where she could face four-time grand slam winner Naomi Osaka.<\/p>\n

“That would be cool. She’s obviously a really tough player. I’m so stoked that I get to come out here again and play another match. It’s awesome.”<\/p>\n

Anisimova moves through in women’s draw\"Andrew<\/p>\n

American Amanda Anisimova has advanced to the third round of the women’s singles with a straight sets win on Margaret Court Arena.<\/p>\n

The fourth seed took one hour and 43 minutes to get the better of Czechia’s Katerina Siniakova 6-1, 6-4.<\/p>\n

Anisimova was in fine form, racking up 31 winners to Siniakova’s nine. She will go on to face a fellow American, Peyton Stearns or a place in the fourth round.<\/p>\n

Wawrinka drops opening set to Frenchman\"Chris<\/p>\n

Stan Wawrinka, who is playing in his last ever Australian Open, will need to come from at least a set down to advance into the third round.<\/p>\n

Wawrinka is up against France’s Arthur Gea, who is ranked No.198 in the world, and Gea has taken out the first set, 6-4.<\/p>\n
