{"id":430056,"date":"2026-01-22T13:56:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-22T13:56:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/430056\/"},"modified":"2026-01-22T13:56:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T13:56:12","slug":"maddison-inglis-wins-epic-australian-open-second-round-match","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/430056\/","title":{"rendered":"Maddison Inglis wins epic Australian Open second-round match"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Knowing a 10-point tiebreak was going to decide her Australian Open fate, Maddison Inglis chose the simplest approach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Take it one point at a time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It was always going to be the best avenue to victory against the vastly experienced Laura Siegemund, given fatigue and nerves had set in after more than 3 hours on court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Anything can happen in 10-pointers,&#8221; Inglis said about the final-set tiebreak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I just tried to focus on one point at a time. I got a good lead, which was great. I had a little bit of a buffer if I got a little bit nervous at the end.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But I was really proud how I managed myself in the tiebreak. I wanted it so bad. (Getty Images: Darrian Traynor)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Having established a 9-5 lead in the tiebreak, Inglis found herself with four match points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The massive crowd \u2014 which included Inglis&#8217;s fiance and fellow professional Jason Kubler \u2014 sensed an Australian win was only moments away; however, Siegemund refused to give up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She saved two of the match points, but it was as close as she could get to the Australian qualifier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Serving at 9-7, Inglis finally sealed the win, landing an overhead backhand volley before collapsing to the court as the emotion of the occasion took hold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;She [Siegemund] would have been nervous, too,&#8221; said Inglis, as she reflected on her 6-4, 6-7 (3\/7), 7-6 (10\/7) second-round win.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I knew she wasn&#8217;t going to give it to me, she&#8217;s such a great competitor. I had to work for it. I&#8217;m really grateful it went my way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Inglis had served for the match in the second set, only to be broken by Siegmund, who would eventually dominate the tiebreak that ensued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In the third set, it was the German who had the chance to close out victory when she served at 5-4, but Inglis showed impressive grit to break her 37-year-old opponent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It swung momentum the way of the Western Australian before she later took command in the deciding 10-point tiebreak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I just kind of kept fighting,&#8221; Inglis said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Everyone around me said, &#8216;Keep believing and just back yourself&#8217;.
