England selector Luke Wright has announced his resignation in the first big casualty since the disastrous Ashes<\/a> tour.<\/p>\n

Wright, who has been a selector for just over three years, will leave his post after next month\u2019s Twenty20 World Cup.<\/p>\n

His departure comes amid speculation over the futures of coach Brendon McCullum<\/a> and director of cricket Rob Key.<\/p>\n

A host of England\u2019s team selections throughout the Ashes raised eyebrows, including only playing rising star Jacob Bethell in the final two Tests, and not playing spinner Shoaib Bashir at all.<\/p>\n

Wright cited the travel demands with a young family as the main reason for his decision to quit.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has been a true honour and privilege to serve as an England men\u2019s selector over the past three years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have fully immersed myself in the role and am incredibly proud of the players we have brought through.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe role demands significant travel and time away from home and with a young family the time feels right to pass the baton on to the next person.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would like to say a big thank you to my colleagues at the ECB, the players and coaches I\u2019ve worked alongside and especially Rob Key, who trusted me with such a responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

Key said it was \u201csad\u201d to see Wright leave.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have absolutely loved working with Luke. His contribution to English cricket has been exceptional and I trust his judgement as much as anyone. He has added so much more to this role than just being a selector,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very sad to see him go and I wish him and his family all the best for the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have no doubt that at some stage down the road he will enhance English cricket once again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the future of McCullum and Key remain in the spotlight as the review into the 4-1 loss to Australia continues.<\/p>\n

England lost the series inside three days before winning their only Test on Boxing Day.<\/p>\n

But off-field issues also plagued the tourists with their drinking culture questioned amid a shock revelation surrounding Harry Brook before an ODI against New Zealand.<\/p>\n

Brook was involved in an altercation with a bouncer<\/a> outside the nightclub the night before he captained the 50-over side in Wellington.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been reported Key\u2019s position is safe, but McCullum\u2019s position could hinge on the upcoming T20 World Cup.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m keen to carry on in the job, and we\u2019ll see. Ultimately, those decisions are up to them,\u201d McCullum said two weeks ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, we haven\u2019t quite achieved the goal that we wanted to achieve by coming down here and winning but there has been some progress.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou never want to throw out what\u2019s worked, you just want to keep chiselling away at some areas which need improvement.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I\u2019d be loath to want to rip the script up and try and rediscover a completely different method.\u201d<\/p>\n
