Tony Tardio has opened up about his absence from the 3AW airwaves, saying he\u2019s both touched and humbled by the avalanche of support he\u2019s received over recent weeks.<\/p>\n

It comes as Nine Radio rejects any suggestion<\/a> that Tardio \u2013 a 30-year veteran of the station \u2013 has been sacked.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Radio Today, the legendary newsreader \u2013 who has lodged action in the Fair Work Commission over the dispute with his employer \u2013 said \u201cI am absolutely heartened that people have taken the trouble to post messages and set up a petition to get me back. It\u2019s really humbling.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t realise when you\u2019re going to work every day how that might impact people, and I\u2019ve been really touched by it, to be perfectly honest with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI will wait to see what happens at Fair Work, and, if need be, go to the Federal Court.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tardio said 3AW has played a vital role in Melbourne\u2019s history over many decades.<\/p>\n

\u201cFreedom of speech is vital in society, and 3AW has always been at the forefront.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Nine spokesperson told Radio Today \u201cTony Tardio has not been dismissed. As part of a change to newsroom operations his position was made redundant.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe remains a valued employee and we have been seeking conversations with Tony for 6 weeks to discuss alternative employment. Tony has declined those invitations and has lodged action in the Fair Work Commission.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t intend to comment further.\u201d<\/p>\n
