A Queensland coroner has found drowning was the most likely cause of death of a Canadian backpacker whose body was discovered on K’gari this week.<\/p>\n

The body of Piper James, 19, was found surrounded by a pack of approximately 10 dingoes on the island’s Eastern Beach at about 6:30am on January 19.<\/p>\n

The Coroners Court of Queensland said further testing was required to conclusively determine the cause of death, but a preliminary assessment indicated that dingo bites found on her body most likely occurred after death.<\/p>\n

“The autopsy has found physical evidence consistent with drowning and injures consistent with dingo bites,” a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

“Pre-mortem dingo bite marks are not likely to have caused immediate death.<\/p>\n

“There are extensive post-mortem dingo bite marks.<\/p>\n

“There is no evidence that any other person was involved.”<\/p>\n

The coroner is waiting for further test results before declaring the cause of death, which is expected to take several weeks.<\/p>\n

‘Courageous and strong’<\/p>\n

Ms James had been working on K’gari for about a week and a half when she told friends and co-workers she was going for a swim at about 5am on January 19.<\/p>\n

Ninety minutes later two men travelling south along the island’s Eastern beach discovered her body.<\/p>\n

Her death sent shock waves around the world, with family posting touching tributes on social media.<\/p>\n

Ms James’s mother, Angela James, told the ABC her daughter was her best friend.<\/p>\n

“She loved life, she was courageous and strong, and I know she fought to the end,” she said.<\/p>\n

“She’s brave and I love her so much and my life will never be the same.”<\/p>\n

Ms James’s father, Todd James, remembered his daughter’s infection laugh and kind spirit.<\/p>\n

“I admired her strength and determination to go after her dreams,” he said.<\/p>\n

“So many are going to miss you, my precious little baby girl.”\"Flowers<\/p>\n

Ms James had been travelling Australia with her friend, Taylor Stricker.<\/p>\n

Ms Stricker’s mother, Marjorie Stricker said ocean and adventure had called to Ms James.<\/p>\n

“She was an athlete, a dirt bike rider, a snowboarder, a dedicated seasonal firefighter and devoted animal lover,” she said.<\/p>\n

“Piper felt most herself when she was out in nature and was always up hiking, camping, snowboarding, surfing, chasing waves, and feeling the sand beneath her feet.”<\/p>\n
