Donald Trump<\/a> withdrew on Thursday an invitation for Canada to join his \u201cboard of peace\u201d initiative aimed at resolving global conflicts.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease let this Letter serve to represent that the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation to you regarding Canada\u2019s joining, what will be, the most prestigious Board of Leaders ever assembled, at any time,\u201d Trump wrote in a Truth Social post<\/a> directed at the Canadian prime minister, Mark Carney<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Trump launched his \u201cboard of peace\u201d initiative at the World Economic Forum in Davos<\/a>, claiming it would be \u201cone of the most consequential bodies ever created in the history of the world\u201d. The board, which will be chaired by Trump, was originally described as a temporary body to oversee the governance and reconstruction of Gaza.<\/p>\n

Permanent members must help fund the board with a payment of $1bn each, according to Trump.<\/p>\n

While the leaders of many liberal democracies declined to sign on to Trump\u2019s new international organization, Carney had, before Davos, accepted in principle, though he said on Sunday his officials had not yet gone through \u201call the details of the structure, how it\u2019s going to work, what the financing is for, etcetera\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cCanada wants money to have maximum impact,\u201d Carney told reporters<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s finance minister, Fran\u00e7ois-Philippe Champagne, then said on Tuesday<\/a> that the Canadians did not plan to pay the $1bn countries were asked to hand over to Trump for a permanent seat on the board that was originally described as a temporary body to oversee the governance and reconstruction of Gaza.<\/p>\n

In a frank address<\/a> to world leaders at Davos on Tuesday, Carney described what he called \u201ca rupture\u201d in the previous \u201crules-based\u201d world order overseen by the United States caused by Trump\u2019s aggressive behavior.<\/p>\n

When he arrived in Davos, Trump made it clear that he had heard or at least heard of Carney\u2019s viral speech.<\/p>\n

\u201cCanada lives because of the United States,\u201d Trump said in his own address on Wednesday. \u201cRemember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCanada doesn\u2019t live because of the United States,\u201d Carney responded on Thursday. \u201cCanada thrives because we are Canadian.\u201d<\/p>\n

Neither Carney\u2019s office nor the White House immediately responded to Reuters requests for comment on Thursday evening.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce this board is completely formed, we can do pretty much whatever we want to do,\u201d Trump said in Switzerland on Thursday. \u201cAnd we\u2019ll do it in conjunction with the United Nations.\u201d<\/p>\n

The board\u2019s establishment was endorsed by a UN security council resolution as part of Trump\u2019s Gaza peace plan, and a UN spokesperson, Rolando Gomez, said on Thursday that UN engagement with the board would only be in that context.<\/p>\n

Member nations include Argentina, Bahrain, Morocco, Pakistan and Turkey.
