{"id":433972,"date":"2026-01-24T07:37:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-24T07:37:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/433972\/"},"modified":"2026-01-24T07:37:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-24T07:37:08","slug":"unfathomable-australian-veterans-disgusted-by-trumps-claim-allied-troops-stayed-a-little-back-from-frontline-donald-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/433972\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Unfathomable\u2019: Australian veterans disgusted by Trump\u2019s claim allied troops \u2018stayed a little back\u2019 from frontline | Donald Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The head of Australia\u2019s largest veteran organisation has categorically rejected Donald Trump\u2019s claim that allied soldiers \u201cstayed a little back\u201d from the frontlines when they supported the US campaign in Afghanistan, calling the comments \u201cunfathomable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The US president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jan\/22\/trump-nato-afghanistan-troops\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">made the comments on Fox News<\/a> on Thursday, saying he was \u201cnot sure\u201d Nato would meet the \u201cultimate test\u201d of defending the US if it were under threat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe\u2019ve never needed them \u2026 They\u2019ll say they sent some troops to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/afghanistan\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Afghanistan<\/a> \u2026 and they did, they stayed a little back, a little off the frontlines,\u201d he said, adding the US had been \u201cvery good to Europe and to many other countries. It has to be a two-way street.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Forty-seven Australian service personnel lost their lives fighting in Afghanistan, while 261 were wounded and almost 40,000 served in what became Australia\u2019s longest war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Returned and Services League of Australia (RSL) national president, Peter Tinley, said he had no doubt the \u201cvast majority\u201d of Australia\u2019s 630,000 veterans would be \u201cabsolutely disgusted and outraged at what really is a cowardly attack by the president on those who can\u2019t defend themselves\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He said the families of the personnel who died would be \u201ccompletely affronted by the fact that their sacrifice \u2026 has been denigrated to the extent that it has. It\u2019s just unfathomable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt\u2019s as senseless as throwing paint on a war memorial and only serves to hurt. It\u2019s completely disingenuous,\u201d he told Guardian Australia on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Saturday, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/jan\/23\/sussan-ley-confident-she-will-survive-as-opposition-leader-and-says-door-is-open-to-nationals-rejoining-coalition\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Liberal leader aspirant<\/a> and MP Andrew Hastie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DT4NopykSdz\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">called Trump\u2019s comments<\/a> \u201ca massive slur, not just against allied troops but against our Aussie diggers who fought, bled and died alongside Americans\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOne of the most important things in building coalitions and alliances is mutual respect, and a really important virtue in a leader is restraint, and President Trump, by dumping on allied troops, has shown neither,\u201d Hastie, who is a former troop commander in the Special Air Service Regiment, continued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Tinley served as the deputy commander of the special forces task group and was deployed at short notice to Afghanistan to participate in the military response to the September 11 attacks on the US. It was the only time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/nato\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nato<\/a> has invoked its mutual defence clause, stating that an attack on one member represents an attack on all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe were the lead force for General James Mattis, who went on to be Trump\u2019s own Secretary of Defence in his first administration \u2026 and then we continued to participate in the longest continuous operation in the history of Australia. Thousands of Australian soldiers, sailors and aircrew participated in that conflict,\u201d Tinley said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He said he hoped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/anthony-albanese\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anthony Albanese<\/a> would clarify with Trump what his comments mean for the future cooperation of Australia under Aukus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">When asked about the comments, government spokesperson said: \u201cAustralian Defence Force personnel in Afghanistan made a very significant contribution, and we continue to honour their bravery and sacrifice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It came as Keir Starmer issued <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jan\/23\/donald-trump-outrage-nato-troops-avoided-afghanistan-frontline\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an unprecedented rebuke<\/a> to Trump for his \u201cinsulting and frankly appalling\u201d remarks about British troops in Afghanistan and suggested he should apologise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Tinley said an apology would be the \u201cminimum effort\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe need reassurance that they\u2019re not going to run away from the fight when they\u2019ve asked us to do so much,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Jennifer Parker, a non-resident fellow at the Lowy Institute and former naval officer, said Trump\u2019s remarks were \u201cdeeply disrespectful\u201d to those who served under the Nato-led mission, their families, and Australia, but \u201cdid not reflect the values or professionalism\u201d of the US military.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">She said the US National Defense Strategy, released on Friday, highlighted the importance of allies, with Australia central to US efforts to deter China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThat makes these remarks all the more troubling. An apology and acknowledgment of allied sacrifice is warranted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe are again in difficult strategic times, where conflict is not unthinkable.
