(AP)Officials say Wedding used semitrucks to move cocaine between Colombia, Mexico, Canada and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/california\" target=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"Southern California\">Southern California<\/a>, and they believe he was working under the protection of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of Mexico\u2019s most powerful drug rings.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities said his aliases included \u201cEl Jefe,\u201d \u201cPublic Enemy\u201d and \u201cJames Conrad Kin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s the modern-day El Chapo,\u201d Patel told a news conference in California, comparing Wedding to the legendary former Sinaloa cartel kingpin Joaqu\u00edn \u201cEl Chapo\u201d Guzm\u00e1n, who is imprisoned in the US after pleading guilty to drug trafficking charges.<\/p>\n<p>Wedding was previously convicted in the US of conspiracy to distribute cocaine and was sentenced to prison in 2010, federal records show.<\/p>\n<p>He now faces charges related to running a multinational drug trafficking ring as well as the killings of a federal witness and three other people.<\/p>\n<p>It was not immediately known if Wedding had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.<\/p>\n<p>He had no lawyers listed in federal court records for the cases pending against him.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It takes a united front\u2019<\/p>\n<p>US authorities believe the former Olympian, who competed in a single event for his home country in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, had been hiding in Mexico for more than a decade before his apprehension.<\/p>\n<p>Wedding was added to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/police\" target=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"FBI\">FBI<\/a>\u2019s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list last March, and authorities had offered a US$15 million reward ($21.7 million) for information leading to his arrest and conviction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you go after a guy like Ryan Wedding, it takes a united front, and that\u2019s what you\u2019re seeing here,\u201d said Patel, who declined to give details about the arrest.<\/p>\n<p>He praised Mexico\u2019s government and \u201cglobal partnerships\u201d for their roles in the operation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/bd9d2f4f-0e67-46df-8c99-c8560f03453e.jpeg\"   alt=\"Royal Canadian Mounted Police Commissioner Michael Duhemespeaks speaks at a news conference about the arrest of former Canadian Olympian Ryan Wedding on multinational drug trafficking charges in Ontario, Calif., on Friday, Jan. 23, 2026. (AP)<a href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/mexico\" target=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"Mexico\">Mexico<\/a>\u2019s Security Secretary Omar Garc\u00eda Harfuch wrote on X earlier Friday that a Canadian citizen had turned himself in at the US embassy.<\/p>\n<p>A member of Mexico\u2019s Security Cabinet later told The Associated Press that individual was Wedding.<\/p>\n<p>The person spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak publicly.<\/p>\n<p>Wedding is expected to appear in federal court Monday, said Akil Davis, assistant director in charge of the FBI field office in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/los-angeles\" target=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"Los Angeles\">Los Angeles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Davis said 36 people have been arrested in connection with the drug ring Wedding is accused of running, and authorities seized large volumes of drugs, weapons and cash, as well as millions of dollars worth of automobiles, motorcycles, artwork and jewelry from Wedding and others charged in the case.<\/p>\n<p>Rewards of up to US$2 million ($2.9 million) are available for information leading to additional arrests and convictions.<\/p>\n<p>Charges of ordering killings<\/p>\n<p>Wedding was indicted in 2024 in the US on federal charges of running a criminal enterprise, murder, conspiring to distribute cocaine and other crimes.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors said Wedding\u2019s drug ring moved large shipments of cocaine from Colombia through Mexico and California to Canada and other US locations.<\/p>\n<p>The murder charges accuse Wedding of directing the 2023 killings of two members of a Canadian family in retaliation for a stolen drug shipment, and for ordering a killing over a drug debt in 2024.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/4f6216c5-9c4e-4631-9b0f-7aa07ed0da90.jpeg\"   alt=\"FBI Director Kash Patel speaks during a news conference about the arrest of former Canadian Olympian Ryan Wedding on multinational drug trafficking charges.\"\/>FBI Director Kash Patel speaks during a news conference about the arrest of former Canadian Olympian Ryan Wedding on multinational drug trafficking charges.
