Darwin parents Abbey and Tom Kiem left their newborn daughter nameless for the first two weeks of her life, as they struggled to pare down an overwhelming list of potential names to the perfect one.<\/p>\n

They said they wanted a traditional, feminine name that would also convey strength \u2014 ideally, something unique that could be shortened into a nickname.<\/p>\n

“So if she wanted to be a CEO some day, her name would suit that type of role, or if she wanted to be an artist, it was friendly,” Abbey said.<\/p>\n

Nora, Emmie and Emily were among the names tossed around and tested out, before they were ultimately scratched off the list.<\/p>\n

“Finally we were like \u2026 she’s an Amelia,” Abbey said.<\/p>\n

The Top End parents had unwittingly chosen the Northern Territory’s most popular baby girl name of 2025, which also proved to be a crowd favourite across the country.<\/p>\n

2025 top baby names revealed<\/p>\n

Every year, each Australian state and territory compiles data from their Births, Deaths and Marriages registries to reveal the most popular names parents picked for their babies.<\/p>\n

Charlotte, Isla and Amelia reclaimed their status as popular female baby names in 2025, with hundreds of babies given those names across a number of regions.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the latest data on male baby names revealed Oliver and Noah made the top 10 list in every jurisdiction.<\/p>\n

Here are the top 10 baby boy and baby girl names from around the country.<\/p>\n

ACT<\/p>\n

Evelyn and Oliver took out the top spots for baby names in the Australian Capital Territory, with the government confirming the boy’s name has appeared in previous lists over the years.<\/p>\n

Last year was the first time Evelyn topped the girls’ list, with 2025 marking the sixth time it made the top 10, growing in popularity and bumping it up from fifth place in 2024.<\/p>\n

Olivia, which shared sixth place with Isla and Matilda last year, has appeared in every top 10 list since 1998 \u2014 except for 2016.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, crowd favourite Oliver has made every one of the ACT’s lists since 2008, taking out the top spot for the fourth time after it won in 2022, 2019 and 2010.<\/p>\n

Noah and Charlotte continued their reign as favourites in New South Wales, sharing the top spot on their respective lists for the third time in four years.<\/p>\n

With 542 baby Noahs born last year, this classic was a strong contender \u2014 almost 100 births separated first and second place on the male list, with 446 boys given the name Oliver.<\/p>\n

Among the baby girls, 403 Charlottes were born in 2025 while the name Amelia \u2014 which took out second place in NSW \u2014 was picked 349 times.<\/p>\n

Of the 3,166 births in the NT in 2025, Noah proved the most popular boys’ name and Amelia \u2014 which means hardworking \u2014 topped the list of girls’ names.<\/p>\n

Isla ranked second on the female list, followed by Hazel, Ruby, then Evelyn.<\/p>\n

Long-time favourites Archie and Oliver once again dominated the boys’ list, while Muhammad ranked sixth and Malakai came in at number 10.<\/p>\n

Queensland is the only jurisdiction that hasn’t revealed their most popular baby names from 2025.<\/p>\n

The ABC contacted the state’s Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages but the data was not available by the time this story was published.<\/p>\n

SA<\/p>\n

In South Australia, just two births separated the most popular baby girl name from second place.<\/p>\n

Charlotte took out first spot, with 95 babies given the name in 2025, while 93 girls were named Isla.<\/p>\n

Oliver proved the most popular male name, with 122 baby boys given the name.<\/p>\n

Coming in at the bottom of their respective top 10 lists, 59 baby Rubys and 70 little Oscars were born last year.<\/p>\n

Noah, which appeared on every state and territory’s list last year, took out first place for the boys in Tasmania.<\/p>\n

Charlotte was most popular among the state’s top girls’ names, followed by Isla.<\/p>\n

George, which placed ninth on the list of male names, is the only pick between both lists that wasn’t featured in any other jurisdiction’s top 10 from 2025.<\/p>\n

More than 500 baby boys were named Noah across Victoria in 2025, while 362 baby girls were given the name Charlotte.<\/p>\n

Between both lists, Ava was the only name that doesn’t appear in the top 10 for any other state or territory.<\/p>\n

There were 234 baby girls given the name last year, making it 10th on the list, while William took out the final spot on the list of popular boys’ names.<\/p>\n

In Western Australia, Isla proved most popular for baby girls, followed by Charlotte then Grace.<\/p>\n

Among the boys, Noah placed first, Oliver ranked second and Theodore came in third.<\/p>\n

Sofia was the only name from either list that doesn’t also appear in last year’s top 10 for another Australian jurisdiction \u2014 although a similar name, spelt Sophia, did place in both New South Wales and the Northern Territory.<\/p>\n

Mark McCrindle, a Sydney-based demographer, has spent years analysing baby names.<\/p>\n

He said drilling down into the data uncovers several deeper, national trends.<\/p>\n

Mr McCrindle said Oliver \u2014 which has been the number one boys’ name in Australia for 12 years in a row \u2014 was expected to keep that crown again in 2026 once Queensland’s data was included, while Noah was rapidly rising as a top contender.<\/p>\n

Data shows Charlotte has also been dominating among girls’ names for a number of years, but Amelia is now making a strong run for the top spot.<\/p>\n

Mr McCrindle said his research showed today’s parents had been avoiding names that were popular with their own parents, instead choosing names from their great-grandparents’ era because they balance “a sense of uniqueness [with] a sense of tradition”.<\/p>\n

He said names popular over the past few decades \u2014 such as Charles, Michael, Chloe and Lara \u2014 were no longer making the top 100 names, however “older names” including Greyson, Theodore and Grace were making a big comeback.<\/p>\n

“The 100-year return means that names we haven’t seen for a long time, like Penelope and also Ava, are doing very strongly at the moment,” Mr McCrindle said.<\/p>\n

“Names like Michael, Craig, Kevin and Tony don’t make the top 100 lists anymore.<\/p>\n

“For girls, names like Nicole, Kylie and Karen \u2014 which dominated the list 50 years ago<\/a> \u2014 are nowhere to be seen.”<\/p>\n

Mr McCrindle said he had noticed a shift as the tech-savvy Generation Z \u2014 born roughly between 1997 and 2012 \u2014 emerged as a new cohort of parents.<\/p>\n

Those mums and dads are increasingly outsourcing the task of naming their children to baby name consultants, he said, and some are turning to artificial intelligence for inspiration.<\/p>\n

He said while some believed popular culture and celebrities dictated on the popularity of baby names, the royal family was actually still the biggest influence.<\/p>\n

“They’re the ultimate celebrities and they tend to choose names themselves that have tradition, which lines up with what Australian parents are looking for,” Mr McCrindle said.<\/p>\n

Abbey isn’t phased by the likelihood her daughter Amelia \u2014 and two-year-old son Oliver \u2014 will share their names with several children in the playground.<\/p>\n

“Amelia is such a beautiful name, and obviously other people think it’s a beautiful name as well,” the Darwin mum said.<\/p>\n
