The Demon, who had never dropped a set against Bublik, would make his rival play way, way too many balls.

Alex de Minaur faces Alexander Bublik on night 8 of the Australian Open, a rematch of their second round French Open thriller.Source: FOX SPORTS

So it proved … for the first two sets as de Minaur zipped away to a 6-2 6-2 lead and near impregnable position. But then came the moment de Minaur might regret forever.

With the finish line within sight of another straight sets win, the Aussie blinked to cough up the third set. The reprieve granted, Bublik kept swinging freely to secure a five set win that left de Minaur reeling.

“Probably look back at my grand slam career, I can’t think of another match where … I ended up losing a match that I probably, by all means, shouldn’t have,” de Minaur said.

“Not to (take) credit away from Bublik. He’s extremely dangerous. But in saying that, I was also two sets to love up. This is a match that … I win 99.9 percent of the time.”

De Minaur was devastated. But at the time, he could not have imagined that he had given Bublik the belief that has seen him become a world beater.

De Minaur crashes out in French Open R2 | 00:56

A year ago the 28-year-old departed the Australian Open in the opening round in straight sets, a character more renowned for his eccentricities on the court than lasting impact.

His talent was indisputable. The big serve. The massive ground strokes. The flashes of touch. Bublik was entertaining to watch but, to his detriment, proved too often the clown.

He had drawn laughs when letting a ball girl take his place in the Paris Masters for a point a few months earlier. Footage of him using the handle for a shot rather than strings went viral.

Some of those trick shots? He had the creativity of an artist at work, but a dubious ethic. He was a free spirited rebel who was not “the most professional guy on the planet”.

As the ATP website reported in a feature last year, Bublik introduced himself as a “full time father and part-time tennis player” and his results mirrored that early in the season.

Stan the man with a can plan! | 00:28

It was a horror show. At Indian Wells he fell to the world No.349 Yosuke Watanuke to take his season record to 2-8, with his ranking plummeting to the 80s.

Bublik was desperate. And it meant stomaching his pride. He returned to Challenger level in Phoenix to play an event for also-rans from Indian Wells and reached the final.

The key there was – and we’re guessing Kyrgios would approve of this approach – a blow out in Vegas suggested by his physio in between the Indian Wells loss and the event in Phoenix.

“The results were not coming, so Jerremy (Kohler) said, ‘Let’s go to Vegas!’ We took a car and we drove there,’” he said.

The recipe worked. And it was good to get some wins in Phoenix but it also sharpened his instincts. Used to the higher-flying life of the regular tour, getting sent back to the minors with few fans to play the circus act was a reality check that was hard for him to stomach.

“I aged a bit. I matured a bit. I’m treating it more like work. I came here to win matches. I came here to do everything that is in my power…to get the win,” he said.

“I’m trying to fight. I’m trying to get the balls back. This is the mentality I (caught) last year. I have no joy coming here, taking the third set, losing in five, yelling, breaking racquets. I don’t feel the need to do that.”

Sinner survives scare against Spizzirri | 01:35

De Minaur could have added to the woes of Bublik, who arrived in Roland Garros after a first-round loss in Hamburg, his eighth early exit from an event for the season.

Instead the powerhouse learned he had the stomach and the capabilities to reel in one of the world’s best players, a player who is almost always Kryptonite to lower-ranked rivals.

The cavalier became the craftsman. He learned to appreciate the work that goes into the sport. Winning had never really meant much to him until, suddenly, it did.

A couple of matches later he defeated Jack Draper in a ripper and wept tears of joy in the city of love, the victory propelling him into his first grand slam quarterfinal.

“The emotion that I felt there, I never had before. And I liked it,” he said.

“If I could play tennis like this, maybe I’m going to have more of those moments. And I had it the very next week.”

Jannik Sinner beat him in Paris. But when they met on grass in Halle soon after, he upset the four-time major champion and later Daniil Medvedev to win a good-tier grass event.

Sinner admits he was ‘lucky’ in AO win | 03:13

He lost at Wimbledon but then went back-to-back in Gstaad and Kitzbuhel before reaching the last 16 at the US Open, where Sinner exacted his revenge in ruthless fashion.

He struck again in Hangzhou and, in a concern for de Minaur, got the Aussie once more in the Paris Masters in late October in a thrilling three set clash.

At the start of this season, Bublik added yet another title to his burgeoning haul in Hong Kong and remained unbeaten heading into the Sunday night blockbuster.

The serial prankster had all of a sudden become a serial winner, a belief that he could make it born out of that massive comeback to derail the Demon in late May.

Defending champ Keys advances at AO | 00:51

There is another factor as well. Bublik may be the life of the party but he also revels in playing the anti-hero, so to speak. He knows the crowd will be against him on Sunday. But it is a challenge he is greatly looking forward to.

“He’s a local hero. He’s a great player. We’ve shared a lot of matches together and I can’t wait to step on to the court with him,” Bublik said.

De Minaur will, of course, be looking at the match with optimism despite his last two losses. Both matches were extremely tight and Bublik played his best.

The Aussie is also in stellar touch. His effort to defeat Frances Tiafoe in straight sets on Friday night was illustrative of his continued improvement.

Tiafoe is a powerhouse. But the No.6 seed was able to diffuse his weapons while also landing more than a few body blows himself.

Vacherot wows Melbourne with wonder shot | 00:34

In that match the Aussie landed his first serve at a percentage about 60 which, if he can repeat the feat, will make him hard to beat in any match that he plays.

“I have always been one to let my tennis do the talking and I have always found it quite tough to have that confidence if the results aren’t there,” he said.

“I know some players have the ability to not be affected by results, but for me, in terms of confidence, it was quite hard for me to really believe in myself unless I got those results.

“As the years have gone on, I have had those results. I mean, last year I had, I don’t know the exact stat, but I had a lot of wins on hard courts, and I was kind of a force to be reckoned with throughout the year. Obviously if I want to take the next step, I’ve got to believe that I can do it, right?

“I’m now at a position where I know my game (and) I know what I want. I know that I don’t want to be another number in the draw. And I know that there are a lot of people that don’t think I can do it. That’s completely fine, but I’m going to keep on pushing myself with my team and trying to prove those people wrong.

“That’s just going to add some more fire to the belly, and I have not yet achieved what I want to achieve in this sport. So there is still plenty more (of my) career to get there.”

He is the monster Alex de Minaur helped create, a dynamo who shapes as a dream destroyer for…

[565
64,63,85,747
0":"post-435576","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-tennis","8":"tag-au","9":"tag-australia","10":"tag-sports","11":"tag-tennis
["GET
