I had him in the NPL with me for the last three years and I couldn’t wait to find a way of giving him an opportunity to prove that he could do what he did today at this level.

“I am really happy for him and the result today.’

Roar coach Michael Valkanis said his team should have had the game wrapped up by halftime.

“We had enough chances to finish that game off in the first-half,” Valkanis said.

“That’s how I felt. We shouldn’t have gone in (to halftime) at 1-0. It should have been 3-0 or 4-0.

“I didn’t like the way we started the second half. We didn’t press high enough. We let them get on the ball, and they got a goal, but we reacted well.

“I guess the last goal was a final blow.”

Brody Burkitt of United. Photo by Chris Hyde/Getty ImagesSource: Getty Images

Earlier, it was only some last-gasp defending from Adelaide’s teenage centre-back Sotiri Phillis to deny Roar taking the lead in just the fourth minute.

Having got behind the Reds defence, Roar striker Long played the ball across the face of the goal that seemed certain to find Michael Ruhs at the far post.

However, just as Ruhs was about to finish from close range, Phillis intercepted the cross to clear the ball to safety.

Similar clutch defending, this time from Roar left-back James McGarry, saved the hosts in the 11th minute when Adelaide’s Ryan Kitto was about to unleash a shot with only Brisbane goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis to beat.

It was only the woodwork that denied Brisbane the lead in the 21st minute after the suspect Reds defence failed to deal with a long throw from Roar fullback Youstin Salas.

The ball eventually fell for Long, whose shot hit the base of the post before rebounding into the arms of grateful Adelaide goalkeeper Joshua Smits.

Brisbane persevered and was rewarded with the lead in the 41st minute through the impressive Klein.

Afforded far too much space and time by the lethargic visitors, Klein dribbled the ball before shooting from about 20 metres out, with the strike nestling into the bottom corner of the net.

However, Adelaide came out with much more intent after halftime, with Burkitt’s heroics ensuring the Reds took all three points home to South Australia.

D’Agostino returns

Socceroos striker Nick D’Agostino entered the contest as a 77th-minute substitute in what was his first Roar appearance since April 2019.

The 27-year-old marksman rejoined the club last week on loan from Norwegian outfit Viking FK in the hope of plenty of game time, and goals, in his bid to be named in Australia’s squad for this year’s FIFA World Cup.

A late inclusion in the match-day squad, D’Agostino received warm applause from the Roar faithful when he came on for fellow striker Chris Long.

“I couldn’t bring him on earlier – it’s not possible,” Valkanis said.

“We’re not going to bring him on earlier and injure him. I would have loved to bring him on earlier … but we’ve got to be smart about that.”

Goodwin’s struggle

Another World Cup hopeful, Adelaide captain Craig Goodwin, continued his inconsistent season with a patchy performance.

Having played well, and scored, in the Reds’ 2-1 win a week earlier over Melbourne Victory, Goodwin failed to have an impact in the hot Brisbane conditions.

The veteran winger was eventually dragged in the 62nd minute, replaced by Dukuly.

“He played his part in the game,” Andrioli said.

“Playing in Queensland is always difficult with the conditions. Humidity plays a part. It took quite a lot of him.”

Matildas star suffers injury scare | 01:01

MACARTHUR PUTS SIX PAST CITY

The Macarthur Bulls have charged their way into the A-League’s top three after demolishing Melbourne City 6-2 at Campbelltown Stadium.

Mile Sterjovski’s charges have flown under the radar for most of the season, but they are becoming harder to ignore after a spectacular all-round performance during which they completely demoralised the defending champions.

“We had a game plan throughout the week, and I thought we executed it well with the high press and suffocated them a bit,” Macarthur defender Callum Talbot told Paramount+.

“We were quite frustrated with the draw against the Mariners last week … and it’s just good to see what we do throughout the week come to fruition.”

Macarthur currently sits third on the ladder with 23 points, behind Auckland (25) and Newcastle (24). However, Sydney FC will overtake them if they draw against Melbourne City on Monday. Conversely, Melbourne City sits in seventh, one point out of the top six.

“I don’t think there were many positives out of tonight … It wasn’t good enough from the get-go,” conceded City skipper Aziz Behich.

“It’s something that we really have to rectify because it happened last week, but we got ourselves out of it.

“At this level, you can’t continue doing that because you’re going to get punished.

“We lost a lot of 50-50 challenges in the middle of the park and were late to pressing.

“We were just a bit too soft … we need to take it as a lesson.”A poor parry from City goalkeeper Patrick Beach was the catalyst for the opening goal. After recovering the ball on the edge of the box, Bulls winger Walter Scott immediately rifled in a cross to an unmarked Mitch Duke, who headed home from close range.

The home side doubled their advantage three minutes later, when Max Caputo’s loss of possession allowed Luke Brattan to catch Beach out of position with a curled shot from 40 metres out. Unfortunately, the veteran Socceroo didn’t finish the match after injuring a knee during an aerial challenge.

Macarthur win big against Melbourne City | 01:20

Two goals down, City were reeling, but they pulled one back in the 24th minute when Macarthur keeper Filip Kurto made a meal of Medin Memeti’s header. However, Anthony Caceres reinstated the Bulls’ two-goal lead when he strolled through City’s defence and calmly pushed a low shot past Beach.

The Bulls’ stampede continued during the second half. Luke Vickery grabbed his side’s fourth of the evening after finishing off an opportunity he created by dispossessing Ryan Teague after 63 minutes. Next, it was Dean Bosnjak, whose blistering run down the left touchline culminated in goal number five in the 70th. City loanee Marcus Younis grabbed a consolation goal for the visitors in the 84th minute, but the final word went to towering Bulls forward Harrison Sawyer, who flew high to grab another headed goal in injury time.

Sir Duke

Veteran forward Mitch Duke proved his worth on Saturday night by adding a new dimension to the Bulls’ attack. Making his first start for the club since joining from Japan’s FC Machida Zelvia, the 50-cap Socceroo grabbed the opening goal and came very close to grabbing a second when his 40th-minute header rattled off the crossbar.

If he maintains his current form, he’s a shoo-in for Tony Popovic’s World Cup squad.

Goodbye Kai

If Saturday was anything to go by, City will sorely miss defender Kai Trewin, who sat out the game ahead of an impending move to Major League Soccer side New York City FC.

Without Trewin’s steady influence, City’s defence looked more porous than an overused sponge.

Adelaide United teenager Brody Burkitt announced his A-League arrival with a second-half hat-trick to sink Brisbane Roar at…

[563
64,63,596,85
0":"post-435656","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-football","8":"tag-au","9":"tag-australia","10":"tag-football","11":"tag-sports
["GET
