Queensland authorities will euthanise a pack of dingoes involved in the death of Canadian backpacker Piper James on K\u2019gari<\/a>, declaring the animals an \u201cunacceptable public safety risk\u201d.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for the Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation said rangers had observed \u201caggressive behaviour\u201d within the group and confirmed the animals would be put down.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are aware of the initial findings of Piper James\u2019 autopsy. We extend our deepest sympathies to Piper\u2019s family and loved ones,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

\u201cRangers have closely monitored the pack of dingoes involved in the incident this week and have observed some aggressive behaviour. Following the initial autopsy findings, this pack\u2019s involvement in the incident, and observations since, this pack has been deemed an unacceptable public safety risk.\u201d<\/p>\n

The spokesperson said Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service rangers were \u201ccurrently implementing actions accordingly\u201d and stressed there was \u201cno public safety risk during this process\u201d. \u201c<\/p>\n

Dingoes involved in Monday\u2019s incident will be humanely euthanised,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n

The announcement comes as Piper\u2019s family grapples with the possibility they may never know exactly what happened in her final moments.<\/p>\n

The 19\u2011year\u2011old was found dead near the surf at the Maheno Wreck about 6am on Monday, roughly an hour after she is believed to have gone for an early\u2011morning swim.<\/p>\n

A small group of dingoes was discovered around her body, with police confirming the animals had \u201ccome into contact with her\u201d.<\/p>\n

Her father, Todd James, said he received the autopsy and toxicology results<\/a> late on Thursday night, only to learn they were inconclusive.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey told me it could take another two months before we know anything more,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven then, they said we still might not get the full truth. It\u2019s devastating.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Queensland Coroner\u2019s Court spokesperson said the initial findings point to drowning as the most likely cause of death.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe autopsy has found physical evidence consistent with drowning and injuries consistent with dingo bites,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPre\u2011mortem dingo bite marks are not likely to have caused immediate death. There are extensive post\u2011mortem dingo bite marks. There is no evidence that any other person was involved.\u201d<\/p>\n

Todd said Piper \u201cloved nature, loved animals, and would never have supported a dingo cull\u201d, but he believes safety measures on the island must change.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want another family going through this,\u201d he said. He wants stronger staff training, mandatory carrying of dingo sticks, and even a ban on children under 13 visiting K\u2019gari.<\/p>\n

The tragedy has sparked debate within the local community, with some fearing the incident will lead to broader culling.<\/p>\n

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli has not ruled out any option, saying authorities \u201cwill consider all advice\u201d.<\/p>\n

Traditional owners have urged against a cull, instead calling for caps on visitor numbers and periodic island closures.<\/p>\n

They believe K\u2019gari\u2019s true annual visitor count is closer to 800,000 \u2014 far higher than the official estimate of 500,000.<\/p>\n

In the immediate aftermath of Piper\u2019s death, more rangers were deployed to the island, campgrounds were closed and the state\u2019s public safety education campaign was expanded. Increased patrols and the \u201cBe dingo\u2011safe\u201d messaging will continue in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n
