(Supplied: Charles Sturt University)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Professor Baumgartner said a common recommendation that emerged was to create a permanent fish ladder at the Menindee main weir to ease the concentration of huge numbers of fish at the site when they travelled upstream, but a temporary solution was also needed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;[A permanent fish ladder] would be quite expensive and a bit time-consuming, you&#8217;re looking at a five to six-year time frame at a minimum,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;So you had to do something in the meantime to get the fish through, whilst a permanent site was scoped.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you don&#8217;t come up with a temporary solution, there&#8217;s a real risk that fish deaths will happen again.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A pipe leading from the Darling River over a road and into the Menindee Lakes\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/6043b8e868aca7e931ee4d0aa779c28c.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Fish are transported up this pipe over a steep embankment after being identified by AI.
