Here’s what we know about Minneapolis shooting<\/a><\/p>\n The death of 37-year-old US citizen Alex Pretti has prompted a fierce political debate and further protests in an already tense city. This is what we know about the situation so far.\u00a0<\/p>\n The videos appear to contradict statements by the Trump administration, which said the shots were fired “defensively” against Mr Pretti as he “approached” them with a gun.<\/p>\n In the videos, Mr Pretti is seen with only a phone in his hand.<\/p>\n During the scuffle, “gun, gun” is heard, and an officer appears to pull a handgun from Mr Pretti’s waist area and begins moving away.<\/p>\n As that happens, a first shot is fired by a Border Patrol officer.<\/p>\n There is a slight pause and then the same officer fires several more times into Mr Pretti’s back.<\/p>\n Afterwards, authorities said Mr Pretti had a 9mm semiautomatic handgun.<\/p>\n He was licensed to carry a concealed weapon.<\/p>\n Kristi Noem says Alex Pretti had attacked officers.<\/p>\n Minneapolis is being ‘invaded’, says mayor<\/p>\n Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who said he watched one of the videos, said he saw “more than six masked agents pummelling one of our constituents, shooting him to death”.<\/p>\n Mr Frey said Minneapolis and St Paul were being “invaded” by the administration’s largest immigration crackdown, dubbed Operation Metro Surge.<\/p>\n Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem claimed that Mr Pretti attacked officers, and Customs and Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino said Mr Pretti wanted to do “maximum damage and massacre law enforcement”.<\/p>\n ICE agent fatally shoots woman<\/a><\/p>\n The mayor of Minneapolis says the Trump administration’s claim that the incident was self-defence is not true and told Immigration and Customs Enforcement to get out of the city.\u00a0<\/p>\n In posts on X, US President Donald Trump’s deputy chief of staff, Stephen Miller, called Mr Pretti “a would-be assassin”.<\/p>\n It was the second fatal shooting in Minneapolis by federal immigration authorities in January.<\/p>\n The first, on January 7 of Renee Good, was captured on videos<\/a> and produced a similar schism among political leaders.<\/p>\n Mr Pretti’s shooting occurred when officers were pursuing a man in the country illegally who was wanted for domestic assault, Mr Bovino said.<\/p>\n Protesters trying to disrupt the operation, including Mr Pretti, sounded high-pitched whistles, honked horns and yelled at officers.<\/p>\n Video analysis<\/p>\n At one point, in one of the videos, Mr Pretti is seen standing in the street and holding up his phone.<\/p>\n He is face-to-face with an officer in a tactical vest, who places his hand on Mr Pretti and pushes him toward the footpath.<\/p>\n Mr Pretti is talking to the officer. It is not clear what he is saying.<\/p>\n The video shows protesters wandering in and out of the street as officers, some carrying pepper spray canisters, try to keep them at bay.<\/p>\n One protester is put in handcuffs.<\/p>\n ICE agents urged to leave Minneapolis<\/a><\/p>\n It is the second death in Minneapolis linked to the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.\u00a0<\/p>\n Mr Pretti comes into view again when the video shows an officer, wearing tactical gear, shoving a protester.<\/p>\n The protester, who is wearing a skirt over black tights and holding a water bottle, reaches out for Mr Pretti.<\/p>\n The same officer shoves Mr Pretti in his chest, causing him and the other protester to stumble backward.<\/p>\n A different video shows Mr Pretti then moving toward another protester, who falls over after being shoved by the same officer.<\/p>\n Mr Pretti moves between the protester and the officer, reaching his arms out toward the officer.<\/p>\n The officer deploys pepper spray, and Mr Pretti raises his hand and turns his face.<\/p>\n The officer grabs Mr Pretti’s hand to bring it behind his back, deploys the pepper spray canister again and then pushes Mr Pretti away.<\/p>\n ‘Gun, gun’<\/p>\n Seconds later, at least a half-dozen federal officers surround Mr Pretti, who is wrestled to the ground and hit several times.<\/p>\n Several agents try to bring Mr Pretti’s arms behind his back, and he struggles.<\/p>\n Videos show an officer, who is hovering over the scuffle with his right hand on Pretti’s back, backing away from the group with what appears to be a gun in his right hand just before the first shot.<\/p>\n![\"Kristi](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/6071cef97d0336fa44bf63e539336185.jpeg\")
