Australia Day family event cancelled<\/a><\/p>\nAn annual Australia Day event in the Adelaide CBD has been cancelled ahead of potentially the hottest day in six years.<\/p>\n
The BOM’s website shows the temperature at Adelaide’s West Terrace station climbed above 44C \u2014 breaking the previous Australia Day record of 41.1C, which was set in 2006.<\/p>\n
“We have now broken the record for the hottest Australia Day in our climate records,” Mr Fischer said.<\/p>\n
But he added that temperatures were not expected to peak until late this afternoon.<\/p>\n
Tops above 48C have been recorded in Port Augusta and Tarcoola, and above 46C in Port Pirie, Roseworthy, Cleve, Coober Pedy, Roxby Downs and Woomera.<\/p>\n
The BOM said Adelaide was headed for an overnight low of 31C \u2014 the hottest since December 2019.<\/p>\n
“Be mindful and definitely keep the air conditioner on and look out for yourself tonight,” Mr Fischer said.<\/p>\n
A change is expected to bring relief in the form of milder conditions in the middle of the week, but tomorrow is expected to be another day of extreme fire danger.<\/p>\n
“What is of particular concern is those strengthening north-westerly winds ahead of that change on Tuesday,” Mr Fischer said.<\/p>\n
“Combining with that wind is going to be some extreme temperatures across, particularly, eastern districts.<\/p>\n
“We’re looking at temperatures that may challenge January or even annual records across the state tomorrow.”<\/p>\n
The State Emergency Service (SES) said, amid the extreme heat, the arrival of strong winds elevated the risk of falling trees.<\/p>\n
The Country Fire Service (CFS) said tomorrow would be a day of “extremely high fire danger”, with total fire bans in place for large parts of the state.<\/p>\n
