Sir Donald Bradman<\/a>‘s baggy green has been sold for a record auction price and will remain in Australia after going under the hammer.<\/p>\n

The legendary Test cricketer, who amassed just shy of 7000 runs at an average of 99.94 in his career, gifted the match-worn cap to a teammate more than 75 years ago.<\/p>\n

Bradman wore the cap during a 1947-48 series against India shortly before he retired.<\/p>\n

After weeks of build-up to the final auction on Australia Day, the cap was sold for $460,000 – the most for any of Bradman’s baggy greens.<\/p>\n

It will be displayed in a prominent Australian museum following the auction after being held by the same family through three different generations.<\/p>\n

“This is a genuine piece of Australian cricket history that Sir Donald Bradman personally gifted and that has been preserved by the same family for more than 75 years,” Lloyds Auctions chief operations officer Lee Hames said in a statement.<\/p>\n

“Its remarkable condition, combined with Bradman’s status as a national icon, makes it extraordinarily rare to see an item like this enter the public domain.<\/p>\n

“That it will remain in Australia and be publicly displayed is a fitting outcome.”<\/p>\n
