Virtually every time they took to the stage, frontman and bassist Ian \u2018Lemmy\u2019 Kilmister would step behind the mic, tilt his head back and make the announcement, \u201cWe are Mot\u00f6rhead, and we play rock \u2018n\u2019 roll\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u200bThere have been variations over the years, \u201cWe are Mot\u00f6rhead, and we\u2019re gonna clean your clock\u201d to \u201cWe are Mot\u00f6rhead, and we\u2019re gonna screw your old lady\u201d, but the speed metal titans\u2019 on-stage proclamations broadcast clearly the musical tradition they tried to honour until the founder and captain\u2019s death in 2015. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not qualified to do anything else,\u201d Lemmy told Bass Player in 2011. \u201cI am not going to suddenly quit and become an eye surgeon.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u200bLemmy was shaped by rock \u2018n\u2019 roll. Like a recurring motif throughout rock\u2019s evolving chapters, Mr Kilmister can be seen suited up eager for a slice of the British Invasion lending his little known guitar chops to Blackpool beat group The Rockin\u2019 Vickers, then shifting amps as part of Jimi Hendrix\u2019s road crew, conjuring the Space Ritual street psych for Hawkwind, before building a bridge between punk and heavy metal for his 40-year Snaggletooth juggernaut.<\/p>\n

\u200bThe keen swerve around the new wave of British heavy metal tags in favour of the tried and tested R\u2019n\u2019R speaks to Lemmy\u2019s fervent fandom. Doggedly staying put in the elemental cradle of popular music, Mot\u00f6rhead\u2019s shoulder to shoulder with the 1950s\u2019 plugged-in flashbang was a chance for Lemmy to spiritually hang out with his teen heroes, sharing some affectionate realm with Elvis Presley and his \u201cgolden god\u201d, Little Richard.<\/p>\n

\u200bHe was always paying attention to rock\u2019s evolving climate, however, playing with The Damned during their punk heyday and penning 1991\u2019s \u2018RAMONES\u2019 in honour of New York\u2019s CBGB veterans. Jumping later in rock\u2019s timeline, Lemmy namechecked Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain as one of the artists\u2014living or dead\u2014he\u2019d most want to collaborate with.<\/p>\n

\u200bHowever, all roads lead to Liverpool\u2019s finest in the end. \u201cLennon and McCartney, of course, although I couldn\u2019t work with them. I mean, I\u2019d end up being beaten to death by the awe of it all.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u200bThe Mot\u00f6rhead frontman was always effusive about his love for The Beatles. As well as forever highlighting their formative influence, he famously countered the impression that The Rolling Stones were the bad boys\u2019 answer to the clean-cut Fab Four, noting their Merseyside upbringing as a stark contrast to the \u201cmummy\u2019s boys\u201d who \u201cwere all college students from the outskirts of London.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u200bThe Beatles\u2019 hook was stuck in Lemmy ever since first witnessing them play at the lauded Cavern Club in their hometown, reportedly inspiring the future bassist to initially pick up the guitar. Before long, the road to rock royalty would at least be soldiered, finally gleaning his stature once Mot\u00f6rhead kicked off in the late 1970s.<\/p>\n

\u200bFull of surprises, Lemmy also plucked out a time capsule of 2000s symphonic metal as a final entry to his collaborative fancies. \u201cI would like to collaborate with Amy Lee from Evanescence,\u201d he said. \u201cI bet she is a really good writer.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
