MLB\u2019s popularity is \u201cbooming based off TV ratings and global reach,\u201d yet its near-term future is \u201cclouded by broadcast uncertainties both local and national\u201d as well as looming labor negotiations, according to Gabe Lacques of USA TODAY. This the past winter\u2019s free agent activity suggests that \u201cmany franchises remain in very good health, based on the diversity of franchises engaging aggressively in a market lukewarm in talent.\u201d So why would the Dodgers\u2019 signing of RF Kyle Tucker<\/a>, \u201cof all people, be the contract that broke baseball\u2019s decades of relative labor peace?\u201d Both the Dodgers and the big-spending Mets are operating within the rules, but the rules were not \u201cconceived with the notion that a man with a net worth north of $20 billion would pair it with a burning desire to win.\u201d The outcome is not \u201cideal: The Dodgers and Mets followed by an upper middle class that\u2019s larger than baseball would like to admit, followed by teams in less-large (no, not small) markets.\u201d Lacques: \u201cThe question that will roil the industry, from now through the moment [Commissioner Rob] Manfred locks out the players in December until the moment labor peace is presumably achieved: Is a salary cap the answer?\u201d The industrywide price, in management\u2019s eyes, \u201cshould be a salary cap.\u201d Lacques: \u201cA greater solution: A little more competence and a little more care from those who have displayed precious little of either\u201d (USA TODAY, 1\/24<\/a>).<\/p>\n
