City of Hope\u00ae,\u00a0one of the largest and most advanced cancer research and treatment organizations in the United States with its National Medical Center\u00a0ranked among the nation’s top cancer centers by U.S. News & World Report,\u00a0has opened a\u00a0phase 2\u00a0clinical\u00a0trial\u00a0comparing three different strategies for protecting heart health in prostate cancer patients who receive androgen deprivation therapy\u00a0(ADT), a\u00a0potentially lifesaving\u00a0hormone therapy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

ADT is a cornerstone of prostate cancer treatment, but it can have significant unintended effects on cardiometabolic health. Addressing these metabolic and cardiovascular consequences is essential to improving overall health, reducing long-term morbidity and optimizing outcomes for patients undergoing cancer therapy.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Yun\u00a0Rose Li, M.D., Ph.D., principal investigator, assistant\u00a0professor\u00a0and physician-scientist in the Department of Radiation Oncology at City of Hope<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The purpose of the study is to offset risk so people can continue to\u00a0benefit\u00a0from lifesaving ADT cancer treatment.\u00a0Prostate cancer patients who receive ADT are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease, including heart attack, stroke and other heart and blood vessel problems.\u00a0This may be\u00a0due to treatment-related metabolic changes that can lead to weight gain, insulin\u00a0resistance\u00a0and an increase in body fat.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A focus of Dr. Li’s lab has been on mitigating the side effects of\u00a0cancer treatments, including radiotherapy and ADT. The new trial builds on her\u00a0previous\u00a0work.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The trial will compare three approaches: intermittent fasting with a 16-hour fasting window,\u00a0an anti-obesity medication\u00a0targeting\u00a0the body’s natural glucagon<\/a>-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) signaling pathway\u00a0and\u00a0the American Heart Association’s\u00a0Life’s Essential\u00a08 guidelines. Participants will be assigned to follow one of these approaches for six months while continuing their cancer treatment of radiation and hormone therapy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Researchers will conduct comprehensive assessments of participants’ metabolic and cardiovascular health,\u00a0including clinical endpoints, biomarkers,\u00a0imaging\u00a0and other tools. Patients will be followed for 12 months after they complete the intervention\u00a0portion\u00a0of the study.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0trial’s\u00a0primary goal is to\u00a0determine\u00a0if these interventions, which are already widely used in other clinical settings, are also\u00a0feasible\u00a0and safe\u00a0for\u00a0prostate cancer patients receiving hormone therapy.\u00a0<\/p>\n
