{"id":440427,"date":"2026-01-27T09:44:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T09:44:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/440427\/"},"modified":"2026-01-27T09:44:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T09:44:08","slug":"problem-gambling-linked-to-exposure-during-childhood-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/440427\/","title":{"rendered":"Problem gambling linked to exposure during childhood \u2013 study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Problem gambling is much more likely among people exposed to gambling as children, according to a new study by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI).<\/p>\n<p>The study suggests that rates of problem gambling are significantly higher among people who gambled as children, whose parents gambled, or whose parents had positive attitudes towards gambling.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers concluded that where gambling products are shown to have particular appeal to children \u201cstronger regulation of those products is justified\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>They also suggested that addressing problem gambling among parents may \u201cindirectly help to protect\u201d their children from developing problem gambling, given the suggestion of a link to exposure during childhood.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"434\" width=\"640\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/problem-gambling-linked-to-exposure-during-childhood-study.jpg\" alt=\"A betting website taking bets on virtual horse racing\" data-title=\"Virtual Racing Stock\" data-copyright-holder=\"PA Archive\" data-copyright-notice=\"PA Archive\/PA Images\" data-credit=\"Scott Wilson\" data-usage-terms=\"\"\/>The study suggested that addressing problem gambling among parents may \u2018indirectly help to protect\u2019 their children from developing problem gambling (PA)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProblem gambling\u201d is when a person\u2019s gambling disrupts and damages their life, with negative impacts on finances, wellbeing and social circles.<\/p>\n<p>The research, carried out by the ESRI\u2019s Behavioural Research Unit and commissioned by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI), gathered anonymous online responses from a representative sample of more than 1,600 adults.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found a strong link between current gambling behaviour and childhood experiences, controlling for social background.<\/p>\n<p>Those who gambled as a child were almost twice as likely to suffer from problem gambling.<\/p>\n<p>Having a parent who gambled increased the likelihood of problem gambling by one third, while parental attitudes to gambling had a similarly large effect.<\/p>\n<p>People who both gambled as children and had a parent who gambled a lot were four times more likely to suffer from problem gambling.<\/p>\n<p>The research also concluded that \u201cthe weakening influence of parents in younger age cohorts\u201d suggests that regulations targeting non-family-related exposure to gambling, such as marketing, \u201cmay be taking on greater importance\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis growing importance of extra-familial factors also has implications for problem gambling treatment if it means that more people with no family history of gambling are seeking treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It said the effectiveness of limiting children\u2019s exposure to gambling should be measured.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"715\" width=\"953\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1769507048_97_problem-gambling-linked-to-exposure-during-childhood-study.jpg\" alt=\"A young girl playing a slot machine in an amusement arcade\"\/>Slot machines were among the most common form of gambling encountered by children before the age of 18 (Alamy\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>The majority of the sample had engaged in at least some form of gambling when under 18 years old.<\/p>\n<p>The most common forms were slot machines, scratch cards, horse or dog betting, gambling among friends, bingo and lotteries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese results demonstrate that childhood experiences of gambling have damaging effects on people\u2019s lives as adults,\u201d said Dr Shane Timmons, senior research officer at the ESRI and report author.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTogether with our best estimate that one in 30 adults in Ireland now struggles with problem gambling, these findings strengthen the case for regulation of gambling.
