{"id":442030,"date":"2026-01-28T03:14:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T03:14:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/442030\/"},"modified":"2026-01-28T03:14:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T03:14:07","slug":"calls-for-increased-safety-around-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/442030\/","title":{"rendered":"Calls for increased safety around schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"283\" data-end=\"450\">Local governments are calling for greater investment in active transport infrastructure to improve safety around schools and encourage more children to walk and cycle.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"452\" data-end=\"688\">The Western Australian Local Government Association (WALGA) has outlined a range of measures to support safer school precincts, including new infrastructure, targeted interventions and complementary programs to promote active transport.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"690\" data-end=\"967\">The initiatives, detailed in WALGA\u2019s 2026-27 State Budget Submission, aim to improve safety for children, support healthy and active lifestyles, and enhance neighbourhood liveability. WALGA has called for $4 million in funding to support delivery across local government areas.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"969\" data-end=\"1092\">WALGA President, Karen Chappel, said safer pedestrian and cycling infrastructure was critical within school catchments.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1094\" data-end=\"1175\">\u201cFootpaths have got to be safe and there\u2019s got to be shared paths,\u201d Chappel said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1177\" data-end=\"1324\">\u201cThere needs to be correct signage so everybody clearly understands that this is a cycleway or clearly understands there\u2019s a footpath or crosswalk.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1326\" data-end=\"1433\">\u201cWe want children to be active and independent, and to do all that, we have to make it a safe environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1435\" data-end=\"1655\">A Department of Transport spokesperson said the State Government was committed to improving walking and cycling infrastructure and had already invested more than $1.4 million through the Connecting Schools Grant program.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Local governments are calling for greater investment in active transport infrastructure to improve safety around schools and encourage&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":442031,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[569],"tags":[64,63,784,85],"class_list":["post-442030","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-cycling","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-cycling","tag-sports"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/442030","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=442030"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/442030\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/442031"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=442030"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=442030"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=442030"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
