A teenage boy accused of killing a woman while riding an unlicensed high-powered electric motorbike through a park in Perth’s north has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter.<\/p>\n

The Perth Children’s Court was told the 17-year-old intended to plead guilty to the lesser charge of dangerous driving causing death over the incident that killed a 59-year-old woman at Picnic Cove Park in July last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

His lawyer Simon Watters told the court that the plea was “not accepted” by the state prosecution and would need to be heard before the President of the Children’s Court.<\/p>\n

The boy, who is facing several charges, also pleaded not guilty to driving while impaired by drugs on the day of the incident.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, he did admit to possessing cannabis with intent to sell or supply, use of an unlicensed light vehicle, and never holding a driver’s license.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In separate charges, the boy pleaded guilty to reckless driving to escape police pursuit and failing to comply with a direction to stop in a circumstance of aggravation.<\/p>\n

Magistrate Andr\u00e9e Horrigan addressed the need to progress the case during the hearing.<\/p>\n

“There are two families who need to have some closure,” she said.<\/p>\n

In a previous court hearing, Mr Watters said there were investigations to determine if anything had been done to the bike<\/a> in question mechanically that “contributed to the accident”.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to police, about five minutes before the alleged incident, a police officer on a motorcycle turned on his lights and sirens to try to stop the accused, who accelerated away from police, then travelled off-road.<\/p>\n

“The evade police incident was terminated due to public safety concerns, and Police Air Wing continued to monitor the vehicle,” police previously said in a statement.<\/p>\n

In court on Wednesday, the Magistrate told the 17-year-old it was “very clear” the matter should go before a judge, given its serious nature.<\/p>\n

His bail was extended with conditions in place, which include a curfew.<\/p>\n
