The Austrian company, better known for its turntables, continues to expand its electronics range with this versatile half-width box that packs thirteen inputs and outputs into a familiar S-series aluminium chassis.

Inputs

On the analogue side, there are two line-level RCA inputs plus a dedicated MM phono stage with 45dB of gain. Digital sources are well catered for: two TOSLINK inputs, one coaxial input, an asynchronous USB-C input supporting PCM up to 24-bit/192kHz, HDMI eARC for TV audio and Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX HD. The internal DAC circuit is built around a Cirrus Logic CS4344 chip.

Outputs

Outputs include variable RCA for connecting to a power amplifier, a fixed line-level output for feeding a second zone or an external headphone amplifier and a dedicated subwoofer output. There’s also a 6.3mm headphone socket rated at 70mW into 32 Ohms, which is on the weaker side for demanding cans.

Design

This new pre-amplifier continues Pro-Ject’s Braun-esque industrial design language: clean lines, minimal fuss and a focus on functionality over visual flourishes. The chassis keeps things solid and, according to the press release, shielded from interference. Inside, Pro-Ject has reportedly implemented a dual-mono circuit and fitted an analogue volume control with a motor-driven potentiometer.

Target audience

Who might be interested? Owners of active loudspeakers who want a proper control unit with source switching and volume adjustment, or those running a power amplifier who need a central hub to manage multiple sources. Pro-Ject suggests pairing the Pre Box S3 with the matching Amp Box S3 (or Amp Box DS2).

Pricing and availability

Designed and manufactured in Europe, the Pre Box S3 ships with a remote control and is available in black or silver finishes. Pricing says Grüß Gott at £499, €599 or US$699.

Further information: Pro-Ject

Pro-Ject has announced the Pre Box S3, a pre-amplifier designed to serve as the central hub of a…

[6
31963,64,63,44,105
post-444984","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-technology","tag-amplifiers","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-news","tag-technology
["GET
