{"id":445972,"date":"2026-01-29T21:49:19","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T21:49:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/445972\/"},"modified":"2026-01-29T21:49:19","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T21:49:19","slug":"genetically-modified-purple-tomatoes-bound-for-fruit-shops-after-regulator-approval","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/445972\/","title":{"rendered":"Genetically modified purple tomatoes bound for fruit shops after regulator approval"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Genetically modified tomatoes the colour of a plum are set to go on sale in Australian fruit shops for the first time this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Purple Bliss tomato has been approved by the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator and Food Standards Australia New Zealand, allowing it to be grown and distributed in Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The purple tomato was bred to include genes from the snapdragon flower which adds colour and antioxidants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It will be the first fresh GM whole food to be grown and sold in the country, with other GM crops in Australia only approved for cultivation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Five dark purple tomatoes. (Supplied: GrainGrowers)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re starting to realise that science and food production work hand in hand,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The way we ensure consumers get the best eating experience is by embracing what we know from research, innovation and technology combined with traditional growing practices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;A lot of GM food products in Australia aren&#8217;t actually consumed directly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Take canola, for example, we produce oil from it, [but] that oil doesn&#8217;t contain any of the DNA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This tomato though is a product you put straight on your plate.
