{"id":446518,"date":"2026-01-30T03:34:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-30T03:34:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/446518\/"},"modified":"2026-01-30T03:34:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-30T03:34:13","slug":"why-im-sending-my-next-sculpture-into-space","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/446518\/","title":{"rendered":"Why I\u2019m sending my next sculpture into space"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Sir Anish Kapoor is planning to send a sculpture the size of a house into space in a launch that will cost hundreds of millions of dollars. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The British sculptor suggested that the work would be visible from Earth and would highlight the \u201cinestimable magic of space\u201d in a protest against the commercialisation of the heavens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cIt is hard not to sound pompous, but what we are trying to do is bring back the early sense of adventure in space,\u201d Kapoor, 71, told The Times on Thursday. \u201cIt was a whole new frontier, but now there is a sense we are conquering it for other purposes \u2014 it is all about money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Kapoor, who won the Turner prize in 1991, is known for bold works including the ArcelorMittal Orbit tower, Britain\u2019s tallest sculpture, which was built for the London 2012 Olympic Games and helped to secure Kapoor\u2019s place in the cultural icons section of UK passports. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The ArcelorMittal Orbit with a new tunnel slide being constructed in London, United Kingdom.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/\/d2bb631c-845e-4cec-b81b-26b7d58ea279.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The ArcelorMittal Orbit tower<\/p>\n<p>JACK TAYLOR FOR THE TIMES<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Pondering his new challenge, he said: \u201cWhat is adequate? What can stand up against vast, eternal, cosmic space? I doubt it will have writing on it, but it will be \u2018interpretable\u2019.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Kapoor said that existing rockets would be able to deliver the sculpture into orbit. \u201cThere is all kinds of technology to make this possible,\u201d he said. He acknowledged that \u201ceven sending a few kilograms into space costs a huge amount of money\u201d and suggested the price tag would be in nine figures. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">He was reluctant to name his backers, saying only that they were \u201cnot necessarily American\u201d and did not include Elon Musk, whose Starlink network of more than 9,000 satellites in low-earth orbit are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/business\/companies-markets\/article\/elon-musks-starlink-is-rewiring-the-world-but-at-what-cost-5vrd0w52n\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">used by nine million people<\/a> and made a profit of $72 million in 2024. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cI cannot stand Musk\u2019s approach to space, which is deeply entrenched in money and gross capitalism. I also object to his political reach in the UK,\u201d Kapoor said, in reference to Musk\u2019s support for Tommy Robinson\u2019s anti-migrant rally in London last September. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cSpace politics is currently rather disgusting,\u201d he added. \u201cWe are instead hoping to launch a work of art which is useless, which is something rather magical. The people backing me agree with this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Kapoor said he was inspired by the 1969 moon landing and the work of the International Space Station. The challenge, he said, was \u201cphysical, poetic and intellectual\u201d and \u201cnot about occupying space\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The sculptor, who was the first living artist to have a solo exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, in 2009, and was knighted in 2013, has been unafraid to use his work as a form of protest. In 2014, the Japanese artist Makoto Azuma attached a bouquet of flowers to huge balloons that rose to 100,000ft, on the edge of space, where the petals detached and fell to Earth like confetti. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Four years later, the Mexican artist and musician Nahum sent up an interactive work to be put on the International Space Station and Trevor Paglen, an American, teamed up with the Nevada Museum of Art to launch the arrow-shaped sculpture Orbital Reflector into space.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"NINTCHDBPICT000487925630\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/\/482748e5-8716-406a-82b7-fc9a5c4331d4.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Trevor Paglen with a rendering of his Orbital Reflector<\/p>\n<p>GETTY IMAGES<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The record for the largest amount of art and culture packed into one launch goes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/science\/article\/how-voyager-map-solar-system-space-ntp2wmzvl\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the two 1977 Voyager probes<\/a>, which hold discs containing data about human life, language and history for aliens to study.
