England skipper Harry Brook has admitted he lied about other teammates not being present when he was \u201cclocked\u201d by a nightclub bouncer in New Zealand<\/a>.<\/p>\n

BBC Sport<\/a> reported Brook\u2019s initial statement that he was out on his own in Wellington was to protect other players in the team that were with the Engalnd white-ball captain. <\/p>\n

In a statement, Brook conceded others were with him and he lied to protect them \u201cfrom being drawn into a situation\u201d.<\/p>\n

It comes after the Daily Telegraph reported Brook, Jacob Bethell and Josh Tongue, could be subject to an investigation from the cricket regulator. <\/p>\n

\u201cI accept responsibility for my actions in Wellington and acknowledge others were present that evening,\u201d said Brook.<\/p>\n

\u201cI regret my previous comments and my intention was to protect my teammates from being drawn into a situation that arose as a result of my own decisions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have apologised and will continue to reflect on the matter. This has been a challenging period in my career, but one from which I am learning.<\/p>\n

\u201cI recognise I have more to learn regarding the off-field responsibilities that come with leadership and captaincy. I remain committed to developing in this area and to improving both personally and professionally.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brook was named captain of England\u2019s ODI and T20 teams last summer and the New Zealand series was his first overseas tour as skipper. <\/p>\n

The 26-year-old was involved in the altercation the night before the third one-day international in Wellington on 1 November, which England lost with Brook scoring just six. <\/p>\n

At the time he was fined \u00a330,000 (AU$60,000) and given a final warning over his conduct, but the incident and punishment only came to light more than two months later following Engalnd\u2019s 4-1 Ashes series loss to Australia after the fifth Test in Sydney. <\/p>\n

In an interview with BBC Sport last week, Brook said he didn\u2019t want to \u201cgo into any details\u201d of the Wellington incident, but explained it began with some players \u201cgoing out for food\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was no intention of going out, no intention of putting ourselves in a tricky situation,\u201d Brook said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI took it upon myself to go out for a few more and I was on my own there. I shouldn\u2019t have been there.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was trying to get into a club and the bouncer just clocked me, unfortunately. I wouldn\u2019t say I was absolutely leathered. I\u2019d had one too many drinks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brook apologised for the incident ahead of the Sri Lanka series, speaking publicly for the first time about the incident. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve learnt from my mistakes,\u201d Brook told reporters in Colombo. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve reflected a lot and I know it wasn\u2019t the right thing to do. <\/p>\n

\u201cI want to apologise to my teammates, the fans and the ECB for putting them in a tricky situation,\u201d said Brook, who will lead England in next month\u2019s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n
