England\u2019s Rose followed up a 10-under first round on the North Course with an arguably more impressive seven-under effort on the tougher South Course, where he closed with back-to-back birdies to set a 36-hole tournament scoring record with a total of 17-under 127.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat was two special rounds of golf, today probably even more so just given it\u2019s hard to often follow up a low one,\u201d said the 45-year-old, the 2013 US Open champion whose 12 PGA Tour titles include the 2019 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.<\/p>\n
\u201cI felt like decision-making was spot on in terms of how I managed my game,\u201d Rose said after a round that featured six birdies, an eagle and one bogey.<\/p>\n
Rose was four strokes in front of Ireland\u2019s Seamus Power, who rebounded from his only bogey at his penultimate hole, the eighth, with an eagle at the ninth to post a six-under 66 for 131.<\/p>\n
Power was two shots ahead of Americans Joel Dahmen and McMcGreevy. Dahmen had three eagles in his 63 and McGreevy signed for a 67 to join him on 11-under 133.<\/p>\n

Five-time major winner Koepka, one of the highest-profile players to join LIV when the Saudi-backed renegade tour launched in 2022, was 14 off the pace but he\u2019ll be playing the weekend in his first tournament back on the PGA Tour.<\/p>\n
Two-time major winner Xander Schauffele wasn\u2019t so fortunate as his streak of 72 consecutive PGA Tour cuts made — the fifth-longest such streak in tour history — came to an end, the American\u2019s three-under 69 leaving him one stroke shy of the weekend.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s going to be nice to have the weekend off. Going to go home and relax and regroup,\u201d Schauffele said.<\/p>\n
While so many people in the golf world were watching along to see if Schauffele could keep the streak going, the man himself said it wasn\u2019t something he was thinking about in the moment.<\/p>\n
\u201cNot really,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI mean, afterwards. There\u2019s no boards on the North Course so I kind of missed my putt and I looked at Austin and I said, Is that it? He said, Yeah, you\u2019re done, and I was like okay. So, you know, in terms of pulling a tooth, that was kind of it.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think the whole point of the streak is you just — I mean, Scheffler\u2019s on a good one and you<\/p>\n
don\u2019t really think about it, you\u2019re just trying to hit as many good shots as possible and make<\/p>\n
as many good putts as possible.<\/p>\n
\u201cI had plenty of golf today to make it and bogeying a drivable par 4 and parring two par 5s inthe middle of the fairway, you deserve to miss the cut. So here I am.\u201d<\/p>\n
Koepka, meanwhile, hadn\u2019t played a non-major PGA Tour event since the 2022 WGC Match Play and hadn\u2019t played a competitive round in 14 weeks before posting a one-over 73 on Thursday — when he was heartened by the warm reception he received from fans.<\/p>\n
On Saturday he had an eagle and three birdies in a 68 to make the cut on the number at three-under 141.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt feels good,\u201d Koepka said. \u201cJust wanted to play four days this week, I think that was important.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think yesterday I was excited to play, nervous, and kind of didn\u2019t know what to expect,\u201d added Koepka, whose return to the PGA Tour was facilitated by a new program for returning players that includes limitations on eligibility for some top events as well as financial penalties.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday felt more normal,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
