About 17,000 new homes have been promised in an $800 million partnership between the South Australian and federal governments.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, alongside Premier Peter Malinauskas, announced the deal Saturday morning and said nearly 7,000 of those homes would be allocated to first-home buyers.

Mr Malinauskas said a focus of the project was to build new homes as fast as possible.

“The only way we can take on this challenge is to unlock supply and do it quickly — and what this program is all about isn’t just about building more homes but getting on with it and doing it quickly,” Mr Malinauskas said.

Housing affordability is set to be a major issue in March’s state election, with the median house price in Adelaide reaching close to $1 million and an interest rate rise predicted on Tuesday.

Some housing estates in Adelaide’s north have been built and sold to home owners before water and sewerage infrastructure has been installed, while other land releases have been announced without plans for water to be delivered for several years into the future.

Model for other states

The prime minister said the announcement was part of federal Labor’s 2025 election commitment to build 100,000 homes for first-home buyers nationally.

Mr Albanese said on Saturday’s commitment would act as a model for other states.

“During the election campaign we announced that it will be a model for a national scheme and that’s what we’re doing today,” Mr Albanese said.

“This is an agreement worth more than $800 million partnering with the South Australian government.”

The federal government will loan the state government $534 million, including $300 million for water infrastructure in Adelaide’s northern suburbs and $184 million to deliver 1,700 homes at urban renewal projects around Adelaide.

The state government will match $134 million in federal funding for 750 houses for first-home buyers.

Family grateful for help

The prime minister and premier made the announcement at John Tramontano’s family’s home in the northern Adelaide suburb of Munno Para.

Mr Tromantono said he was only able to buy the house with help from first-home buyer schemes.

“Without those, we would not be standing at our house today, so I’m really grateful, and I think our family is too, to finally have our own home,” he said.

“It’s something I thought i would never achieve, to be honest, and yet here we are.”

Urban Development Institute of Australia South Australia chief executive Liam Golding said the biggest impediment to delivering additional housing supply was the infrastructure around it.

“The funding announcement is great, but we need to see this funding turned into pipes and infrastructure as quickly as possible,” he said.More workers needed

Master Builders SA chief executive Will Frogley said 20,000 extra workers were needed to add to the 90,000 already involved in the housing construction industry in the state.

“Everyone knows there’s a tradie shortage; I don’t think people realise just how bad it is going to get in the coming year,” he said.

Opposition spokesperson Ben Hood agreed more workers were needed, along with more construction material.

“South Australians know that Peter Malinauskas loves an announcement but he doesn’t focus on delivery,” Mr Hood said.

He said a Liberal promise to remove stamp duty on all first-home purchases up to $1 million would make a bigger difference, along with increasing the payroll tax threshold and exempting trainees and apprentices from the tax.

About 17,000 new homes have been promised in an $800 million partnership between the South Australian and federal…

[4
3443,64,63,91108,39045,232701,44,232700,26952,74732,11814
post-449863","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-australia","tag-adelaide","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-first-home-buyers","tag-housing-affordability","tag-munno-para","tag-news","tag-playford","tag-premier-peter-malinauskas","tag-prime-minister-anthony-albanese","tag-water
["GET
