{"id":450881,"date":"2026-02-01T04:06:15","date_gmt":"2026-02-01T04:06:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/450881\/"},"modified":"2026-02-01T04:06:15","modified_gmt":"2026-02-01T04:06:15","slug":"liberal-frontbenchers-dismiss-prospect-of-imminent-challenge-to-sussan-ley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/450881\/","title":{"rendered":"Liberal frontbenchers dismiss prospect of imminent challenge to Sussan Ley"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Liberal frontbenchers have dismissed the prospect of a leadership challenge to Sussan Ley in the coming sitting period, after backbencher Andrew Hastie ruled himself out of contention.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Shadow Treasurer Ted O&#8217;Brien also said it was his &#8220;assumption&#8221; that fellow frontbencher Angus Taylor still supported Ms Ley even after he was photographed meeting with Mr Hastie and other key conservatives amid speculation of an imminent spill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The West Australian announced on Friday that he would not run against the opposition leader <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-01-30\/hastie-rules-out-challenge-to-sussan-ley\/106287872\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106287872\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">because he did not have the support of his colleagues<\/a>, effectively clearing the way for Mr Taylor to challenge her at a time of his choosing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But Mr O&#8217;Brien insisted the majority of Liberals backed the current leader, as politicians prepared to return to Canberra for the first full sitting fortnight of the year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;As for whether or not there will be a challenge, I don&#8217;t believe we&#8217;re walking into a period where there will be. But I don&#8217;t know the future either,&#8221; the shadow treasurer told ABC&#8217;s Insiders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The convention is if one does not support the leader, they step aside. Angus hasn&#8217;t done that. So my running assumption is he continues to support Sussan Ley in her leadership.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr O&#8217;Brien would not comment on whether it was appropriate for a shadow cabinet member to participate in a meeting to discuss the party&#8217;s leadership, repeatedly stating he did not know what was discussed when a group of <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-01-29\/hastie-and-taylor-fail-to-agree-who-should-challenge-sussan-ley\/106283820\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106283820\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">five Liberals got together hours before a memorial service for their former colleague on Thursday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-01-30\/hastie-rules-out-challenge-to-sussan-ley\/106287872\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hastie rules out challenge to Sussan Ley<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The West Australian backbencher had made no secret of his desire to lead the party but says he will not run against Sussan Ley this week, a move which could pave the way for Angus Taylor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I wasn&#8217;t there, I&#8217;m not going to pretend I know. And I&#8217;m not going to come on your show and make things up for you. I wasn&#8217;t in the meeting. I don&#8217;t know. Period,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The meeting in Melbourne, which included Mr Hastie and Mr Taylor along with fellow conservatives Jonathan Duniam, James Paterson and Matt O&#8217;Sullivan, did not result in a <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-01-29\/hastie-and-taylor-fail-to-agree-who-should-challenge-sussan-ley\/106283820\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106283820\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">clear decision on who was best placed to run for leader<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A day later, however, Mr Hastie issued a statement saying it was clear he did not &#8220;have the support needed to become leader of the Liberal Party&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Opposition MPs from across factions do not expect a spill in the coming week, but a move is still anticipated within months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In the event of a leadership challenge, Mr O&#8217;Brien said he would not throw his hat in the ring and that he was focused on being shadow treasurer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I haven&#8217;t found anybody in the Liberal Party who has disagreed with the decisions taken by Sussan Ley,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Liberal frontbencher Anne Ruston also said she did not think there would be a spill against Ms Ley in the coming fortnight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There&#8217;s obviously been speculation but I quite frankly believe entirely that Sussan Ley has the support of the party room and that she will remain leader into the future,&#8221; she told Sky News.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Talking about and speculating about leadership does nothing to serve the important issues that the Australian public are facing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Health Minister Mark Butler said he did not understand &#8220;how Angus Taylor is still on the frontbench&#8221; given last week&#8217;s clandestine meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;At least Andrew Hastie did the right thing, the honourable thing, and went to the backbench,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Angus Taylor is still pretending to be a shadow minister while plotting against his own leader.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nationals facing own leadership challenge<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It comes as Nationals leader David Littleproud stares down a separate attack on his leadership, after the minor party split from the Coalition for the second time in a year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Nationals will meet on Monday afternoon and Mr Littleproud will face a spill motion launched by Flynn MP Colin Boyce, who has called for the Coalition to reunite.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Littleproud has delayed discussions over the future of the Coalition due to the challenge, despite no serious suggestion that it will succeed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Liberal leader Sussan Ley and Nationals leader David Littleproud.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bb32b988f7f703bb16571b41f4c70e8e.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Liberal leader Sussan Ley and Nationals leader David Littleproud. he was.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I&#8217;m very confident in the success, longevity, and resilience of the Nationals party, but I would like to see the Coalition come back together,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">On the Liberal side, Mr O&#8217;Brien and Ms Ruston also both said they hoped the two parties could reach an agreement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I do believe it&#8217;s in the\u00a0national interest that we work together.\u00a0That&#8217;s always been the case,&#8221; the shadow treasurer said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But he added that there needed to be &#8220;serious conversations&#8221; before that could occur.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;ll wait until the National\u00a0Party meeting is over tomorrow and\u00a0then of course discussions can\u00a0begin,&#8221;
