Mount Gambier’s Margaret Pink smiles as she remembers the parties \u2014 thousands of them \u2014 across south-eastern South Australia during her 57 years as the country’s second-longest serving “Tupperware lady”.<\/p>\n

“I went from this shy, quiet mother-of-three in a country town to a manager \u2014 with six to 10 parties a week,” she said.<\/p>\n

Mrs Pink said the extra income also helped her family when her husband was unable to work for a prolonged period.<\/p>\n

“He really supported me, and in turn, Tupperware took us around the world,” she said.<\/p>\n

Iconic plasticware opened doors<\/p>\n

In December last year, Mrs Pink closed the lid for good on her time with Tupperware, coinciding with the company’s withdrawal from the Australian market due to financial pressures.<\/p>\n

For the best part of six decades, she travelled the region showcasing the plastic fantastic food storage ware to thousands of households.<\/p>\n

Only one other woman from Queensland \u2014 \u00a0where the Australian arm of the brand was launched in 1961 \u2014 can lay claim to having served a longer tenure.<\/p>\n

The rise and fall of Tupperware’s plastic empire<\/a><\/p>\n

How did Tupperware manage to cultivate such a passionate\u00a0following that it remains 77 years after the brand’s inception? The answer likely has little to do with plastic containers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Tupperware came along at a time when I think country women needed some social outlets. The late 1960s and 70s had plenty of tough times, especially for those on the land, but a Tupperware party in a farmhouse could bring women together for a bit of fun,” Mrs Pink explained.<\/p>\n

“It provided social connection and bridged isolation in rural communities.”<\/p>\n

Mrs Pink said she “couldn’t put a figure” on the number of parties she had held, nor the kilometres travelled.<\/p>\n

“Too many to count; it wasn’t uncommon to travel a couple of hours to host a party in Kingston, pack up and head to Keith, then finish up across the border in Casterton \u2014 all in one day,” she recalled.<\/p>\n

Plastic fantastic revolution<\/p>\n

Mrs Pink was born just three years before the global juggernaut, Tupperware, was invented in 1947 by American Earl Silas Tupper, who developed a new form of polyethylene plastic that was easy to mould and mass produce.<\/p>\n

His first product was the “Wonder Bowl”, which was praised for its sleek, modern design and leak-proof lid modelled on a paint tin top.<\/p>\n

“Many products like Tupperware had real novelty. They were unlike anything that had been seen before,” wrote American cultural historian Jeffrey Meikle.<\/p>\n

Mrs Pink agrees with this analysis.<\/p>\n

“We taught people how to look after their food \u2014 before Tupperware, a lot of people would just keep food in plastic bags that would be washed and re-used,” she said.<\/p>\n

Beyond the early plain white designs, Tupperware soon ventured into colour \u2014 pastels, at first, and then vibrant hues of the era; from harvest gold to sunny yellow, 70s taupes and sunburnt orange.<\/p>\n

It took a little convincing on the part of the company’s salesforce \u2014 the Tupperware ladies \u2014 to get the new colours into kitchens.<\/p>\n

“In the early days, we had to sell the product, but in the end, it sold itself,” Mrs Pink said.<\/p>\n

“When the lettuce crisper first arrived, it was green. I’ll never forget one dear old lady; she came along to a party and took one look at it and said, ‘Whoa, dearie! What a way-out colour!'”<\/p>\n

The storage container company \u2014 once famed for its indestructibility and lifetime guarantee \u2014 exited the Australian market in 2025, ending over 60 years of local presence.<\/p>\n

Despite Australia being its strongest market during the COVID pandemic, Tupperware filed for bankruptcy in September 2024, citing a significant increase in competition and subsequent declining demand, and rising input costs.<\/p>\n

“Over the last several years, the company’s financial position has been severely impacted by the challenging macroeconomic environment,” chief executive officer Laurie Goldman said in a press release.<\/p>\n

Mrs Pink and her “pink panthers” sales team met the end of the era with quiet resolve.<\/p>\n

Something new was just around the corner.<\/p>\n

“I’d been with Tupperware since 1967, I didn’t just want to stop,” she explained.<\/p>\n

“So I decided to put the call out for donations of Tupperware that I could on-sell and raise money for the local Mount Gambier in-home hospice support group, who had helped my husband before he passed away.<\/p>\n

“It turns out ‘Tupper-thrifting’ is pretty popular; people are looking for original items and some of the vintage colours are in real demand.<\/p>\n

“Within no time at all, I had 50 or 60 items in a corner, and now I’ve got a whole wall and donated over $3,000 in the past 18 months.<\/p>\n

“I’m still taking donations from people \u2014 I have a cleaning process and I’ve never cleaned so much Tupperware in my life. I try to keep prices down.<\/p>\n

“I’m in a shopfront on the main street in town, so people can drop off a bag any time.”<\/p>\n

Amid her Great Wall of Tupperware, Mrs Pink demonstrates a juicer for a customer as another leaves with a bag full of containers.<\/p>\n
