Rupp and her colleagues <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/sleep\/article\/48\/12\/zsaf250\/8321788\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">argue that it can<\/a>, but state that &#8220;sleep debt should be paid off as soon as possible&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Elizabeth Klerman, professor of neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, refutes this idea. &#8220;In order to show that sleep banking occurs, you need to show that somebody can sleep when they&#8217;re not tired, and there is no evidence for that,&#8221; she says, citing experiments where participants were given more time in bed but <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/physiology\/articles\/10.3389\/fphys.2021.792942\/full\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">failed to sleep for longer<\/a>.
