Justin Bieber’s Grammys performance is… different.\"Al<\/p>\n

Alone under a spotlight, sporting only satin boxer briefs and socks, Bieber is jamming on a guitar with nothing on stage except a mirror and a brick of guitar effects pedals.<\/p>\n

It’s stripped back, for sure. He sets a guitar loop before singing over the top, performing Yukon – a cut from his surprise solo album SWAG<\/a>, which sees him up for four Grammys.<\/p>\n

But you know what? His voice is as good as ever, and is really selling the boldness, which is kind of what SWAG is all about: an artistic reset for one of music’s most famous pop artists.<\/p>\n

Bieber is set to headline US festival Coachella later this year, in April, and hey if it’s just him up onstage for two hours in his undies doing this kind of thing? Would not be mad.<\/p>\n

Good question, Berry!<\/p>\n

The former One Direction star is on the list to present an award at today’s Grammys so he should be somewhere in the room but he wasn’t on the red carpet.<\/p>\n

Last time he was at the Grammys it was to collect Album for the Year for his 2023 record Harry’s House.<\/p>\n

Just in the last week he dropped dates for his upcoming world tour and some fans were … less than happy at the price tag.\u00a0 Maybe that’s why he’s hiding out?<\/p>\n

A hearty pat on the back to anyone who can spot him.<\/p>\n

Accepting the trophy from last year’s winner, Chappell Roan, Best New Artist winner Olivia Dean looks emotional arriving to the podium.<\/p>\n

She collects herself and soaks up the applause before speaking.<\/p>\n

“Jesus Christ! I never really imagined I would be up here, let alone nominated.”<\/p>\n

She thanks her team, including “best friend and manager, Emily” after a decade grinding together.<\/p>\n

Most pointedly, she takes a subtle dig at the current controversy surrounding the actions of ICE agents in Minneapolis<\/a>…<\/p>\n

“I guess I wanted to say I’m up here as a granddaughter of an immigrant … I’m a product of bravery and I think those people deserve to be celebrated. We’re nothing without each other.”<\/p>\n

A nod that’s as classy and positive as her music.<\/p>\n

That was WILD, we could barely keep up on the blog here.<\/p>\n

In case you missed it, we just saw ALL EIGHT Best New Artist nominees perform in what felt like 60 seconds.<\/p>\n

Which was your favourite? Katseye brining their TikTok famous choreography to real life? Alex Warren’s highwire act? Sombr’s glitterball suit?<\/p>\n

Personally I thought Addison Rae made the most of her very limited time.<\/p>\n

“Grammys, get up!” Young artist sombr is not mucking around for his live debut at the awards ceremony.<\/p>\n

Sombr, the alias of 20-year-old NYC singer-songwriter\u00a0Shane Michael Boose, had a massive viral hit in Back To Friends. But he’s here performing 12 to 2, a funkier, glammier proposition.<\/p>\n

He’s been described as the\u00a0missing link between Jeff Buckley and Harry Styles<\/a>, and if you ask most people under 18, you’d already think he was a superstar.<\/p>\n

Benson Boone could never…<\/p>\n

Sombr also wraps up the Best New Artist medley. That was a whirlwind but I think the ladies snatched it – a big round of applause from me to Olivia Dean, Lola Young and Addison Rae.<\/p>\n

The British singer recently topped triple j’s Hottest 100 with Man I Need.<\/p>\n

Olivia Dean has been touring hard this year, so she sounds more than match fit. She looks and sounds a million bucks.<\/p>\n

It doesn’t matter how many times I hear this song – in supermarkets, in streaming playlists – it always hits.<\/p>\n

British singer-songwriter Lola Young is up next, alone at a grand piano and exhibiting her powerful pipes doing her breakout single Messy.<\/p>\n

She sounds amazing, which is saying a lot given this is one of her first public performances since pulling back from touring after collapsing on stage last year.<\/p>\n

There’s a few teary eyes in the audience who no doubt are across it.<\/p>\n

Alex Warren keeps the BNA performances going\"Al<\/p>\n

Strolling in from a popcorn stand where he acquired his mic (staging!), we now have balladeer Alex Warren.<\/p>\n

Traversing the pipeline from social media influencer and YouTuber to singer, he sounds out of time. But quickly recovers and aligns as he makes his way to a stage that’s decked out with a backing choir and string section.<\/p>\n

Then he’s hoisted aloft on a platform over the arena. It’s like getting a sentimental Eurovision performance in a rapid 90 seconds!<\/p>\n

Katseye and Leon Thomas perform live\"Al<\/p>\n

Next up is multicultural girl group Katseye, who pick straight up from Addison Rae, performing backstage before making their way through hair and make-up and onto the Grammys main stage.<\/p>\n

Performing their signature song Gnarly, they’ve kicked off a massive dance sequence that owes a lot to K-pop groups, which is to say: lots of movement and attitude.<\/p>\n

Leon Thomas takes the spotlight next, jamming on his six-string and bathed in red light on an island platform centre-stage.<\/p>\n

Here’s our first Best New Artist nominee performances\"Al<\/p>\n

Each of the Best New Artist nominees are granted a performance slot at tonight’s ceremony.<\/p>\n

First up, it was LA dream pop quartet\u00a0The Mar\u00edas, known for their woozy textures and singing in both English and Spanish.<\/p>\n

Their moody lighting and moodier guitars had Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas O’Connell giving approving nods in the audience.<\/p>\n

Next up, arriving on the back of a truck is Addison Rae. The young TikTok personality-turned-pop star performs her hit Fame Is A Gun, dancing her way around the road cases and forklifts backstage.<\/p>\n

Kendrick Lamar graces the winner’s podium\"Al<\/p>\n

Lamar’s\u00a0surprise-released sixth album GNX<\/a>\u00a0just took out the Best Rap Album. As mentioned, he’s up for nine nods tonight, so we’re likely to see him give more than one speech.<\/p>\n

As such, he’s keeping it direct for this win.<\/p>\n

“It’s hip hop as usual, man. I’m not good at talking about myself but I express it through the music.”<\/p>\n

He shouted out his “brothers” nominated in the same category, namely Tyler, The Creator and rap siblings Clipse.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Hip hop is always going to be right here. We gonna be in these suits; we gonna be looking good. We gonna be having our folks [and] culture with us.<\/p>\n

“I appreciate you all, God is glory.”<\/p>\n

The Compton rapper is up for nine nominations tonight; the most of any artist. And it comes off the back of last year’s near-sweep, taking home five Grammy Awards around his Drake diss track Not Like Us<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It’s the perfect subject matter for host Trevor Noah…<\/p>\n

“I actually thought about writing a few jokes roasting you. But then I thought about what you can do to light-skinned dudes from other countries.”<\/p>\n

You can’t fault the production crew! The Grammys stage has been decked out like a vintage airport lounge, and here comes the pint-sized singer down the baggage claim carousel.<\/p>\n

Sabrina Carpenter is always such a great fit for these glitzy awards performances. And here she is proving it again with Manchild, another catchy, cheeky song in a catalogue full of ’em.<\/p>\n

Her outfit and voice are totally on point, especially when she switches to an in-flight mic for a little crowd work.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“It’s your Captain Sabrina speaking. If you came here tonight seeking a little validation, put your hands together.” Cue the applause.<\/p>\n

She finishes by climbing a lift on an airplane prop and caressing … a white dove!? Sure why not.<\/p>\n

She’s got superstar charisma, leaving celebs like John Legend and Reba McEntire with giddy smiles plastered on their faces.<\/p>\n

And he wasted no time getting a dig in on the current US political landscape, jumping off from the fact that Lauryn Hill will be performing at tonight’s Grammys for the first time since 1999.<\/p>\n

“Do you know how long ago that was? Back in 1999 the president had a sex scandal, people thought computers were about to rule the world and Diddy was arrested … boy, how times have changed …”<\/p>\n

Ros\u00e9 & Bruno Mars kick off Grammys with APT.\"Al<\/p>\n

The K-pop idol and Mars are bringing an edgier version of their diabolically catchy single APT.<\/p>\n

We’re talking a squad of guitarists, some guitar solo-ing from Bruno, all wearing matching black suits. It’s a high energy start to the ceremony.<\/p>\n

Oh and\u00a0Ros\u00e9 is giving an athletic performance, bunny-hopping around the stage and, might I say, reminding me a lot of Gwen Stefani with her blonde bob and loose tie combo.<\/p>\n

The songs sees Ros\u00e9 and Bruno Mar sup for two major categories, Record and Song of the Year.
